CTAHR CARES Sites

CTAHR's Agricultural Research and Extension Stations (CARES) serve as a driving force for the agricultural economy by helping local farmers grow fruits, vegetables, and livestock, and building community resilience through health and wellness, and 4-H youth development programs.

Kauaʻi County

Kauaʻi County agricultural crops include taro, coffee, cacao, ʻulu, ʻawa, medicinal herbs, forage crops, seed, and farming goats and sheep.

Two of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR) Agricultural Research and Extension Stations (CARES) on Kauaʻi Island include the Kauaʻi Research Station and the Paddy Crops Research Station.

Oʻahu County

Oʻahu County crops include aquaculture, poultry production, cut flower breeding, ornamentals, native plants, controlled environment agriculture for leafy greens, waste to energy, bioeconomy, green roofs, living walls, and natural resource management. 

Four of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR) Agricultural Research and Extension Stations (CARES) on Oʻahu Island include Waimānalo Research Station, Magoon Research Station, Urban Garden Center, and Poamoho Research Station.

Maui County

Maui County crops include ornamental flowers, edible crops, cucumbers, onions, forage crops, herbs, spices, and canoe crops, livestock and agroforestry.

Hawaiʻi County

Hawai‘i County ranks first in the State of Hawai‘i in acres of farmland, agricultural workers, farms, farm wages, value of ag products sold, and a distant second to Honolulu County in government ag employees (USDA 2022 Agricultural Census). Agricultural crops include tropical fruit and tree nuts, aquaculture, floriculture and nursery industries, beef cattle, annual food crops, and other agricultural products.  

The six University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR) Agricultural Research and Extension Stations (CARES) on Hawai‘i Island play a central role in the current and future economic success of Hawai‘i agriculture.  They include the Komohana Research & Extension Center, Waiakea Research Station, Volcano Research Station, Mealani Experiment Station, Lalamilo Research Station, and Kona Research and Extension Center.
