Background/
Overview:
Water reclamation projects often lack public support or even encounter public opposition due to public health safety concerns associated with the reuse of wastewater effluent for irrigation and other purposes. Many existing and new water reclamation projects throughout the state will need to be supported by the public through public educational programs.
Objectives/Goals: To promote water reclamation by educating the public on the positive benefits of water reclamation and the safeguards imposed to minimize adverse public health and environmental impacts.
Methods Employed: A video and pamphlet for water reclamation / recycling was completed and distributed to various governmental agencies and a “speakers bureau” was formed to educate the public on water reclamation. Video shown to intermediate schools and on Maui Community College cable TV. Emphasis was placed on areas or communities in which new effluent reuse projects are being planned. Ewa Plains on Oahu and the island of Maui benefited significantly from the public education efforts where reuse is being pursued to offset water shortages and where algal blooms have been a concern.
