Background/
Overview: |
There is a lack of a model strategy for citizens, including Hawaii’s
youth, to address water quality issues. The students in our community
do not possess the inquiry, thinking skills, and knowledge needed
to resolve water quality issues and to practice environmental stewardship. |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To create a feeling of responsibility for the environment to
reduce nonpoint source pollution by improving delivery of instruction
to schools by developing a water quality monitoring training program
for teachers. |
| Methods Employed: |
Although workshops took place throughout FY 01, the teacher’s
strike in April 2001 forced several workshops to be cancelled.
Partnerships have been established with the Waikiki Aquarium and
the University of Hawaii’s Sea Grant Extension Service. The
Hawaii Watershed website database continues to be upgraded with
visualization technology. The project has produced a base of Master
Cadre teachers who will provide future workshops beyond the scope
of this project. |
