Background/
Overview: |
HACD has been an active partner of the Polluted Runoff Control
(PRC) Program since the late 1980’s. Funds have been provided
to the HACD to assist the Department of Health in non point source
program development and implementation. |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To continue to assist the PRC Program in educating and encouraging
the prevention of nonpoint source pollution by planning and coordinating
water quality workshops. Specifically, this project sought to assist
in developing a non point source compliance program, including
both regulatory and non-regulatory mechanisms, educating federal,
state, and county government agencies about non point source pollution
and developing partnerships with other agencies and organizations
to address non point source pollution. |
| Methods Employed: |
• Secured state funding to hire staff
• Provided information and education to the state legislature
• Organized and facilitated the Hawaii Water Quality Conference held on
May 14-16, 2002 and was entitled, “The Changing World of Water Quality
in Hawaii.” More than 160 people attended the conference representing federal,
state, and county government agencies, educational institutions, community groups,
and private organizations. The project was also successful in establishing technical
assistance programs on every island by actively securing funding from the Board
of Water Supply, the Environmental Response Revolving Fund, and each County. |
