Background/
Overview: |
A significant ongoing problem throughout the state haws been
periodic overflows of raw sewage onto streets, streams, and into
coastal waters. Overflow problems are often caused by uniformed
sewer users discharging extraneous substances and rainwater that
cause clogging, malfunctions, or overloading of sewage collection
systems. Major spills can result in closure of beaches and hazards
to public health. Besides public health risks associated with pathogens,
sewage spills can result in discharge of excessive nutrients into
receiving waters. |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To develop a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to educate the
public about the causes of sewage spills, the impacts of sewage
spills to public health and the associated monetary costs to sewer
users, and the important role of the public in minimizing the occurrence
of sewage spills. |
