Background/
Overview: |
Kaneohe Bay is designated a Water Quality Limited Segment and
the district of Koolaupoko is identified in Hawaii’s Category
I Watersheds. Heeia Stream is one of 11 perennial stream feeding
into Kaneohe Bay. Parts of Heeia Stream and its tributaries have
been redirected and channelized for development. |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To reduce non point source pollution entering Kaneohe Bay through
He’eia stream by planting vegetation along stream banks and
removing alien flora from the immediate area. |
| Methods Employed: |
Over a two-year period, alien riparian vegetation was removed
by hand, and the area was replanted with native species. Over 2000
school children participated in trail building and mangrove removal.
3000 community workers volunteered for stream restoration efforts,
and 50 native milo and 14 koa trees were planted along riparian
zone. Access trails were constructed parallel to the stream, and
thousands of community volunteers, comprised of service clubs,
businesses, students and prison workers, provided labor to facilitate
project implementation. The hands-on nature of the project created
an opportunity for an outdoor classroom where volunteers learned
about the watershed of the He’eia ahupuaa. Aside from field
work, over 15 presentations were conducted to familiarize the community
with the needs and benefits of the project. Lastly, students from
Windward Community College participated in limited water quality
studies. |
