Background/
Overview: |
Coastal and marine ecosystems along the entire south coast of
Molokai have been degraded by sediment-laden runoff that has damaged
beaches, reefs, fishponds, and marine life. Traditional recreational
and fishing uses of this coastline have been severely impacted
by these sediments and associated nutrients. This problem prompted
the Department of Health to designate the area a Water Quality
Limited Segment in 1990. |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To plan, design, and recommend land treatment measures that can
reduce sedimentation and chemical contamination, and improve water
quality in coastal areas and the aquifer of the Manawainui Watershed. |
| Methods Employed: |
• Complete an inventory and general assessment of the physical
watershed
• Develop a conservation plan
• Develop an overall watershed plan and report
• Conduct a community education program on conservation and water quality |
| Watershed: |
Manawainui Watershed, island of Molokai |
| Affected Water Bodies: |
South shore of Molokai, Kualapuu aquifer |
| Deliverables: |
