Background/
Overview: |
Because of excessive sediment from Wai’ahewahewa Gulch
and other sources, the Molokai’s South Shore as been designated
a Water Quality Limited Segment. The problem area consists of a
very steeply dissected landscape that has been in grazing use for
many decades. The naturally fragile environment of this watershed
as not been adequately rested or restored in the past to allow
recovery. |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To reduce soil erosion and the resulting sedimentation that is
damaging the Wai’ahewahewa Watershed and the South Shore
reef. |
| Methods Employed: |
The project was successful in installing over 16,000 feet of
fencing to exclude livestock and wildlife from the project area,
planting ground cover in steep and sloping areas, constructing
terraces to eliminate gully development, and smoothing out the
land to improve surface drainage. Overall, it is estimated that
the project was successful in reducing soil loss by 382 tons per
year. |
