Background/
Overview:
Feral animals are the primary cause of non-point source pollution in the upland watersheds draining into South Molokai. The affected area is comprised of the headwaters of three streams tapped for irrigation and domestic water. The south shore of Molokai has embayments which support wildlife habitat and compatible recreation.
Objectives/Goals: To promote the recovery of native-dominated vegetations in order to reduce soil erosion and storm run-off and stabilize habitat for native species; to prevent the establishment of unstable, noxious, non-native vegetation in native watershed areas previously damaged by feral animals; and to promote the use of these management practices in other watershed areas and expand public knowledge of non-point source pollution and native species issues.
Methods Employed: Built a fence along the eastern boundary of Kamakou Preserve to exclude pigs, goats and cattle from sensitive watershed forests.
Pollutants of Concern: Sediment
Watershed: Waikolu, Kamiloloa, Kaunakakai, Kawela, Kamalo and Pelekunu Watersheds, island of Molokai
Size of Project: 2774 acres
Affected Water Bodies: South Shore of Molokai
