Background/
Overview: |
Soil erosion is a problem in the Hoolehua saddle portion of Molokai.
The natural vegetation was not adapted to withstand heavy grazing
by introduced animals since the early 19th century nor to cattle
ranching and pineapple production in the 20th century. Degradation
of coastal waters and shoreline habitat is a serious problem after
every heavy rainfall due to upland erosion. |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To demonstrate a low-cost, low-technology system to control further
erosion of coastal lands in and around Moomomi Bay, Molokai. |
| Methods Employed: |
• Enhance vegetation cover
• Close most 4-wheel drive tracks and redirect vehicle traffic onto one
access road
• Stabilize 1000 ft of gullies and gulches using rocks
• Monitor water quality before, during and after conservation measures
• Youth educational activities |
| Watershed: |
Moomomi Bay, island of Molokai |
| Deliverables: |
• Environmental science curriculum
•
Signage to inform community about the project (could be good
example for other projects)
•
Educational exhibit
•
