Background/
Overview:
Given the importance of the tourism sector to Hawaii’s economy, and the relative contribution of hotels, condominiums, and golf courses to the pollution load affecting the water quality on Maui, the Hawaii State Department of Health sought to establish and implement a Pollution Prevention Assistance Program for Maui.
Objectives/Goals: To provide guidelines and an audit system to minimize pollutants coming from hotels, condominiums, and golf courses on Maui.
Methods Employed: The project compiled environmental “best practices” whereby participants could evaluate their operations and determine actions that would make better environmental and economical sense. The project was designed to assist the private tourism-related industries in determining a system that meets local needs and requirements to ultimately reduce their pollutants. Training and support was provided for pilot testing the three target audiences (hotels and resorts, condominiums, and golf courses).
Pollutants of Concern: Chemical and irrigation for landscaping
Watershed: Not site specific, island of Maui
Size of Project: Not applicable
Affected Water Bodies: Not applicable
Deliverables:
