Background/
Overview:
Honolua Bay suffers from severe NPS pollutants. The bay has been designated as a Marine Life Conservation District. The purpose of this project was to implement corrective measures to decrease runoff transported in Honolua Stream and Bay. Improvement efforts concentrated in the lower 1/3 of the watershed where much of the lands are in pineapple cultivation, cattle and golf courses.
Objectives/Goals: To implement the area’s watershed plan that recommends redirecting runoff into smaller sub areas to better manage sediment, nutrients, and plastic mulch film using applicable best management practices.
Methods Employed: • Revegetated 17 acres of “badlands”
• Constructed 3 silt catchment basins at various fields
• Completed plastic mulch catchment fence at two fields
• Completed drainage improvements to a field
• Reconstructed terraces on a field
• Constructed road and gulch drainage improvements
• Constructed a sediment catchment fence using bamboo
Pollutants of Concern: Total suspended solids
Watershed: Honolua Watershed, island of Maui
Size of Project: 350 acres
Affected Water Bodies: Honolua Bay and Mokuleia Bay
