Background/
Overview:
The water quality problem in the Waiakea Stream is caused by both natural and manmade factors. During heavy rains the stream is extremely turbulent due to its winding path, undulating bed, and woody bank vegetation. This results in stream bank erosion and the transport of sediment downstream, resulting in sedimentation of Waiakea Fishpond and Hilo Bay.
Objectives/Goals: To reduce NPS pollutants into the watershed by implementing a structural measure on Waiakea Stream and an educational measure to educate residents on adjacent lands.
Methods Employed: • Construct a structural measure to stabilize the bank along a stretch with a history of sloughing and severe erosion
• Provide a filtering mechanism for storm runoff into the stream
• Conduct a workshop to discuss NPS pollutants, the project, and their involvement as residents living adjacent to the project
Pollutants of Concern: Sedimentation
Watershed: Wailoa Watershed, island of Hawaii
Size of Project: Not described in report
Affected Water Bodies: Waiakea Stream, Wailoa Channel, Waiakea Fish Pond, Hilo Bay
Deliverables: None
