Background/
Overview: |
Pelekane Bay, just south of Kawaihae Harbor, is the receiving
water for runoff from a 12,225-acre watershed. This bay has served
as a historical and cultural center for native Hawaiians, as well
as providing a natural breeding ground for many of the indigenous
reef fish species. The watershed draining into Pelekane Bay produces
a significant sediment load during storm events. The majority of
the watershed (11,072 acres) is used for grazing, with agricultural
subdivision, forest reserve, and idle grassland account for the
other land uses (659 ares). |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To reduce the amount of sediment reaching Pelekane Bay by implementing
cost effective BMPs that facilitate the revegetation of desired
species on grazing lands. |
| Methods Employed: |
• Conduct a vegetation survey at different elevations
• Conduct a mulching trial to see the effects on moisture conservation
• Install 19,000 feet of exclusion fencing and a livestock water system |
| Watershed: |
