Demonstration
of Different Cover Crops
On April 28, 2004, Dr. Ali Fares held a field demonstration at Waialua,
on the North Shore of Oahu. The goal of the field day was to share
the results of his team's research using grass cover crops (Oats, Sunn
Hemp and Sudex) as a means to manage nutrients in bare ground fallow
cropping systems. The team is also examining the effects of the cover
crops on weed control. University of Hawaii, Crop Care Hawaii, Waialua
High School, and Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. collaborated on
the project funded by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and
the Hawaii State Department of Health, Clean Water Branch under Section
319(h) of the Clean Water Act and University of Hawaii, College of
Tropical Agriculture and Human and Resources, Sustainable Agriculture
Research and Education.
