Perennial Peanut

Arachis pintoi

Perennial peanut is a low-growing leguminous groundcover that is extensively used in the landscape industry.  One of the benefits to this groundcover is the ability to use selective herbicides to control grassy weeds.  Another benefit is the low maintenance requirement.  You can mow this crop which may lead to an outbreak in weeds, but will come back from stolons and from seed.  By mowing the peanut, carbon and nitrogen is added to the soil through residue breakdown

after mowing: residue breakdown
Perennial peanut is slow to encroach into the crop row.
