Irrigation

Without a minimum soil moisture status it becomes very difficult to establish a successful orchard groundcover system.  Installation of irrigation for this particular experiment was completed on August of 1997.  Three different irrigation systems were used:

  • sub-irrigation between the papaya rows to irrigate the groundcovers
  • above ground drip irrigation to irrigate and fertilize the papaya rows
  • overhead irrigation to flush weeds for desiccation prior to planting

Solar time clock inside the theft proof box to run the solenoids.

Trench made to bury sub-irrigation for groundcovers
The lines ran down the middle of the plots and were buried to allow for mowing of groundcovers at a later date.
The use of overhead microemmitters allows for the germination of weed seed at the soil surface.  This is the first step in achieving a stale seed bed.
