Episode 9 - CTAHR 1998 VS-087 - September '98 - 59:30 min

This episode of The CTAHR Show is entitled Transgenic Papaya...A Second Chance for Hawai`is Papaya Growers (CTAHR 1998 VS-082 - 54:20 min). This video was developed as a training tape that must be viewed by all prospective growers using the new transgenic, or genetically engineered, papaya ringspot virus (PRV) resistant papaya seeds. They were developed as a solution to the devastating PRV disease which has decimated many papaya fields on O`ahu and the Big Island, causing severe losses for these farmers.

These seeds have been developed, through a cooperative effort, by researchers at the University of Hawai`i, Cornell University, the USDA and the Upjohn Company. CTAHR personnel such as Richard Manshardt, Steve Ferreira, Cathy Cavaletto, Mel Nishina and others have greatly contributed to the development and release of this new technology.

However - this new technology, and its licensing agreement, demands strict adherence to procedures that must be followed to prevent degradation of its effectiveness. Hence - the reason for this video production.

Episode 10 - CTAHR 1998 VS-088 - October '98 - 59:30 min

This episode of The CTAHR Show is entitled Organic Coffee Production (1998 VS-089 - 1 hr.). In the first presentation, Randall Hamasaki, County Extension Agent, provides a brief background into entomology and its application to farm practices. In the second, he discusses how to recognize important insect and mite groups by their general physical characteristics and the kinds of damage they cause.

These presentations are part of a series of videotapes developed to prepare discharged Sugar Workers from Wailua Sugar Company for diversified farming ventures on their own. Produced by Wahiawa Cooperative Extension Service agent, Steve Fukuda, the series features CTAHR personnel who cover a wide range of topics that could help farmers.

Episode 14 - CTAHR 1999 VS-122 - March 1999 - 59:09 min

First up is another presentation from the Farming Preparation for Discharged Sugar Workers video series as Dr. Goro Uehara from CTAHR's Department of Agronomy and Soil Sciences presents this basic Introduction to Soil (CTAHR 1998 - VS-096 - 24:35 min)

Produced by Wahiawa Cooperative Extension Service agent, Steve Fukuda, this series of videotapes was originally developed for discharged Wailua Sugar Company workers interested in farming on their own. However, the information presented by CTAHR personnel, who cover a wide range of topics, could help home gardeners as well as farmers.

Along with learning about soils, we need to become aware of what happens when soil and other substances leave the land and are washed into the water. Recently approved by federal agencies in June 1998, Hawai`i's Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control program attempts to improve coastal water quality and pollution runoff control. Lisa Ferentinos from CTAHR's Hawai`i's Water Quality Extension Program provides this slide and video presentation entitled The Coastal Pollution Program and Hawai`i's Farmers (CTAHR 1995 VS-049 - 13:08 min) to help protect the quality of our Hawaiian environment.

Our last presentation - Azolla for Weed Control in Wetland Taro Production (CTAHR 999 VS-124 - 19:46 min) features a floating fern called Azolla and examines it's potential use for weed control in Hawai`i's taro patches. While we need to look for ways to prevent run off of soil or other pollutants, we also need innovations to lessen their usage in the first place. CTAHR Weed Science Specialist, Dr. Joe DeFrank presents this information that may provide other potential benefits in addition to weed suppression. (Revised version has many slides replaced with video footage to better illustrate the experiment and results.)

Episode 15 - CTAHR 1999 VS-123 - April 1999 - 59:18 min

Eduardo Truijllo, CTAHR plant pathologist, presents this report entitled - Phytophthora colocasiae…Resistant Taro Varieties from Palau. (CTAHR 1998 VS-080 - 57:21 min) This seminar was presented on September 22, 1997 at CTAHR's Department of Horticulure.

Episode 16 - CTAHR 1999 VS-125 - May 1999 - 59:18 min

In March 1995, a conference entitled - Marketing for Profit in Agriculture...Emerging Marketing Opportunities for Hawai`i (CTAHR 1996 VS-67 - Tape I - 1 hr 57 min. / Tape II - 1 hr 47 min) was held at the Keauhou Beach Hotel in Kona on the Big Island. Here - both local and out-of-state speakers provided their perspectives and insights..and shared their experiences in local, national and international marketing. We'd like to present just two of the speakers who may inspire thought and action to help rebuild Hawai`i's state economy - Maggie Mah (Mattson Company of California)presents Taking Advantage of Hawai`i's Mystique and Bill Mott (Agland Services) presents Hawai`i in the Global Food Market.

Episode 17 - CTAHR 1999 VS-126 - June 1999 - 46:40 min

Recently there have been several items in the news about the biotechnology field and its potential to help rejuvenate Hawai`iís economy. Much is going on in this somewhat controversial field and discussions are needed to make sure that proper decisions are made.

A conference called Agriculture and Marine Biotechnology...Emerging Technologies for the 21st Century was presented by several state governmental and educational agencies on February 25th, 1998.

One of the speakers was John Mahaffie, Vice President of Coates and Jarratt, a Washington, D.C. firm consulting on the future. His talk entitled A Biotechnology Future for Hawai`i is our presentation for this month's CTAHR Show.

Also presented is an "info-mercial" about one of CTAHR's Extension programs called Take Charge of Your Money (CTAHR 1999 VS-127). This 5 min. piece which was produced by Pamela Kutara and Lynn Nakamura-Tengan, CES Extension Educators, tells us a little bit about how the course can help people learn to manage their personal finances.

Episode 18 - CTAHR 1999 VS-128 - July 1999 - 58:36 min

This episode of The CTAHR Show features two offerings. Originally produced by Lyndon Wester, from the University's Department of Geography, CTAHR Video assisted with re-editing of a program called "Protecting Biological Heritage…Making and Preserving Plant Specimens". Through this collaborative effort, with Lyndon providing the content material and CTAHR Video the post production editing, we completed this video about the preservation of botanical materials. This video was produced for the National University of Lao by the University of Hawai`i's Department of Geography and will be sent to Lao shortly.

Our second presentation, Hawaiian Dress: The Holoku in Historical Context (CTAHR 1996 VS-62 - 38 min), takes a historical look at the development of the Holoku…a style of local and Hawaiian dress, that developed after Western contact and influences in the 1800's. From its inception through years of ensuing evolution, Linda Arthur, from CTAHR's Human Resources department Textile and Clothing program, presents her perspective of the changes in Holoku design.

Episode 19 - CTAHR 1999 VS-129 - August 1999 - 58:36 min

The August '99 episode of The CTAHR Show presents several offerings - Assuring Safer Produce: A Global Issue (USDA/U.S. Food, Safety & Produce Initiative), a "Fight Bac" PSA (Partnership for Food Safety Education public service announcement) and Introduction to Pesticides ("Farming Preparation for Discharged Sugar Worker " series - CTAHR 1998 VS-110 - 49:41 min).

There have been recent developments in the issue of food safety which may affect the way food is being handled, starting from the farm all the way through to your table. CTAHR has developed a Food Safety Team (Aurora Hodgson, Lynn Nakamura-Tengan, Wayne Nishijima, Jim Hollyer, Barry Brennan and Sophia Kathariou); and along with many other organizations in Hawai`i, as well as throughout the nation; are working to inform farmers, wholesale distributors, shippers, packers and producers of these changes. These changes may affect the entire post harvest production process and most importantly, vastly impact farmer practices. Here's a short video piece, entitled Assuring Safer Produce: A Global Issue that provides some introductory information.

"Fight Bac" is a 30 second animation PSA of promoting the 4 basic steps that consumers need to practice for optimizing food safety. Do you know what they are?

To accompany these pieces with a somewhat related topic, Charles Nagamine from CTAHR's Environmental Biochemistry Department provides our second presentation entitled Introduction to Pesticides .which gives basic information on pesticides and their use.

Episode 20 - CTAHR 1999 VS-130 - September 1999 - 59:16 min

In the Fall of 1997, CTAHR Specialist, Donna Ching invited a series of speakers to present information on the topic - Water for Agriculture, to Class VII of her Agriculture Leadership Program. Amongst other speakers representing governmental agencies, farmers and educators…was an attorney &emdash; Moses Haia, whose talk was entitled - Native Hawaiian Rights with Respect to Water (CTAHR 1997 VS-072d -56 min) . However, his presentation was about more than just water…Tune in to get a different perspective about water usage in Hawai`i.

Episode 21 - CTAHR 1999 VS-132 - October 1999 - 49:06 min

This episode of The CTAHR Show features excerpts from the Food Safety Videoconference Workshop #2 held on September 23rd, 1999. These presentations are part of an informational effort coordinated by Jim Hollyer, ADAP project manager, utilizing CTAHR's recently acquired video conferencing technology to link various sites throughout the state. Jim introduces the issue and relays information via a Powerpoint presentation on the Food Safety Guidelines, which was developed by Wayne Nishijima &emdash; CTAHR Food Safety Team member, who was unable to attend.

Also included are rebroadcasts of Assuring Safer Produce: A Global Issue (from the USDA/U.S. Food, Safety & Produce Initiative) and the "Fight Bac" PSA (a public service announcement from the Partnership for Food Safety Education) from the August '99 CTAHR Show.

In addition &emdash; there's a short presentation, Marketing on the Internet by Bob Gerber from the Hawai`i Department of Agriculture. Bob introduces the DOA's Internet site listing program to viewers which may help them market their products.

Note: There were additional portions by representatives Josh Wong and Marianna Rojas from PrimusLabs.com, a food safety auditing firm and from Robert Tse of the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, as well. However, these have not been included in the Show due to time slot restrictions.

Episode 22 - CTAHR 1999 VS-134 - November 1999 - 59:28 min

As many of you are already aware, there are changes coming that may revamp the operating procedures of our entire food delivery system, from field to fork. Safeway Stores has initiated a program that requires produce suppliers throughout all levels of the food delivery system to pass third party audits as a prerequisite to Safeway purchasing. If other local supermarket chains also start to require these audits, as many mainland firms in addition to Safeway have done so, the ramifications to the agricultural industry, as well as processors, may be very, very serious.

There have been several meetings meant to provide information about these food safety based changes. If you've missed these meetings, or would like to review the information discussed, we are currently airing portions of the Food Safety Meeting (CTAHR 1999 VS-133 - 1 hr. 56 min) on this installment of The CTAHR Show .

This Food Safety Meeting, coordinated by Larry Yamamoto (DOA Marketing) was held at the (Hawai`i) Department of Agriculture on Wednesday, September 29, 1999. Included in this month's show is the presentation by Chuck Stoffers, Safeway's Food Safety Director, about the Safeway perspective. Unfortunately, only a portion of the question and answer period is included due to time slot constraints.

In addition, the complete documentation of this event (Food Safety Meeting - CTAHR 1999 VS-133) also includes a Powerpoint presentation by Josh Wong from PrimusLabs, one of the third party food safety audit firms, as well as the complete Q & A portion.

Episode 23 - CTAHR 1999 VS-135 - December 1999 - 59:29 min

The winter rains have started…and along with our Island sunshine, many plants get into a good growing stage. For some this is a blessing…for others, especially farmers and gardeners, this might also mean increased weed growth. Are you tired of dealing with weeds?

This is your chance to learn what a weed is and how to minimize their effect on your crop production. Here's Dr. Joe DeFrank, CTAHR's Weed Science Specialist to provide a comprehensive introduction to Weed Control in a variety of crops along with a few tips and tricks. In addition to weed control in crop production, Dr. DeFrank also gives hints for starting a new lawn.

This episode is a revision of his presentation…"Weed Control" (CTAHR 1998 VS-109), from the Farming Preparation for Discharged Sugar Workers Series…Again, this video series was produced by Steve Fukuda, Wahiawa Extension Agent. The original presentation has been condensed and many additional visuals - both video and stills, have been added to enhance the information output.

Episode 24 - CTAHR 2000 VS-137 - February 2000 - 49:14 min

CTAHR Video's student assistant, Mark Yap, initially started this project as part of a requirement for Dana Davidson's FAMR - Adolescent Development class. Mark completed a 15 minute version but the story was such a good one that I wanted to expand it and produced this full length version.

So - if you're feeling a little down and out...or if you could just use a lift in spirits, here's a story that may give you a boost of inspiration...February's installment of The CTAHR Show is entitled - "If I Could Change the World...the Brian Kajiyama Story". It shares a view into

Brian's life, his challenge with Cerebral Palsy and how he's managed to live a positive life in spite, or perhaps, because of it. Through interviews with Brian's friends, family and others, his inspiring story unfolds...and we are happy to share it with you.

Episode #25 - CTAHR 2000 VS-140 - March 2000 - 59:19 min

This edition of The CTAHR Show which features an adaptation of "The Future of Agricultural Composting and Compost Uses", a CERWA video production. (Unfortunately, we've had to cut a few portions of CERWA's production to fit into our timeslot, so if you'd like to view the entire program please contact us.)

The challenges of agriculture in this day and age sometimes include taking old ideas and knowledge; then revising, adapting or improving them with the technology we have available today. CERWA, or Compost Education and Resources for Western Agriculture, is a SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) group who has done so in the area of composting. It is a cooperative effort comprised of 16 compost specialists and agricultural professionals interested in composting from eight states and provinces in the Western U.S. and Canada.

Their latest educational effort, a video production called - " The Future of Agricultural Composting and Compost Uses", includes a segment on Unisyn Biowaste, here in Hawai`i. This segment relates some of the positive and negative effects of regulations, and how it can affect composting operations. Initially instigated by Jim Hollyer, who is a member of the CERWA Project Team, CTAHR Video assisted with videotaping and acquisition of footage from Hawai`i. This was sent to Ben Troka and Bob Rynk at the University of Idaho, who then edited it into the production.

However, this video production also includes information about new compost technologies, future usage and marketing of composting products, along with thoughts about regulatory issues.

Episode 26 - CTAHR VS-141 - April 2000 - 43:10 min

This episode features Hector Valenzuela, Vegetable Crop Specialist, presenting an Introduction to Plant Botany and Nutrition (CTAHR Reference code: 1998 VS-094). This is another revision of a segment from Steve Fukuda's "Farming Preparation for Discharged Sugar Workers" series, with additional visuals incorporated.

Hector provides a basic look at plant botany to start off the program, with a brief description of the photosynthesis process, then goes on to identify the major plant parts and functions. He proceeds to list the primary, secondary and minor nutrients required by plants, as well as other factors that influence their growth and development. Along with this information, he also provides a description of nutrient deficiency symptoms. The program wraps with a section on the importance maintaining the proper balance of the different nutrients with tips on diagnosing problems with growing problems on farms or in your gardens.
