Sherman Lab Courtyard Relandscaping Project
The Photos
|
|
A lot of time and effort went into the courtyard planting design and choice of plants.
First, we had to prepare the ground for the planting.
Then we had to make sure each and every plant was put in the right location and given enough
space to grow.

Our helpful groundscrew made sure we had all the tools we needed to get the job done.
Getting Our Hands Dirty
Lots of people worked hard to get our trees and shrubs in the ground. Whether working individually
or in groups, we all came together to make it happen.
That includes some of our own NREM faculty
And staff and students!
 |
|
And let's not forget Roxanne Adams, the head of the grounds crew herself! |
 |
A special thanks to Dr. Andrew Kaufman for showing us the right way to plant a tree.
After the Flood
Ten inches of rain the day after the planting provided a critical test of our how well we did.
From these photos taken in January, it's obvious we all did a great job! Thanks to everyone who
participated.
Planting Round 2-The Groundcovers
We didn't stop with planting just trees and shrubs. After recovering from the flood
interruption, we decided to get together to plant our groundcover plants. Some of the most
common plants we used were:
Ilima Papa (Sida fallax)
Kupukupu fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)
|
Naio Papa (Myoporum sandwicense)
|
As usual, we had a great group of dedicated people to help us plant our groundcovers.
This included:
Our own NREM staff
 |
And students
|
Working together, we got it done in short order!
 |
Thanks again to everyone who helped to make this a reality.
Dedication Ceremony
On Earth Day 2005, we gathered together to celebrate our accomplishments and officially
dedicate the courtyard to our campus community. It was a beautiful morning to hold the celebration.
John Osorio and Pua Kauila from Hawaiian Studies opened our ceremony with Hawaiian chants
and some inspiring words about our project. Dr. Travis Idol then talked briefly about the history of
the project.

Next, we acknowledged many of those whose efforts went a long way to making our project a reality. These included
CTAHR faculty and staff like Dr. Rich Criley, Jody Smith, and Steve Nagano, as well as our tireless grounds crew who have helped with everything
from site prepration to planting and maintenance.

A special acknowledgment went to Dr. Samir El-Swaify for providing the funding for much of the project through the
RNRE program. Also, one of our newest NREM graduates, Sarah Erwin, provided us
with several plants for the ceremony in honor of her committee members, Dr. Samir El-Swaify (left), Dr. Mike Robotham (not pictured, Jody
Smith standing in), and Dr. Carl Evensen (right).

With a little help from the heads of grounds, Roxanne Adams, our honored graduate faculty dutifully planted Sarah's special plants
in our courtyard. Don't worry, Sarah; we'll take good care of them!

Then it was time for refreshments! We served mamaki tea, kava, homemade coconut macaroons, and chocolate chip brownies.
Thanks to Dean Meason, Shawn Steiman, and Cortney Midla for preparing our refreshments. A special thanks to everyone who
came out to join us in our celebration of the courtyard dedication ceremony.
