Tree Harvesters’ Professional Education Course

The Tree Harvesters' Professional Education Course was held at the University of Hawaii at Hilo on May 20th to 24th, 2002. The primary instructor was Thom McEvoy, Forest Management Extension Specialist at the University of Vermont.  The course text was Legal Aspects of Owning and Managing Woodlands (McEvoy, 1998, Island Press, Washington, DC).

Day 1 (May 20, Monday): Managing and Using Forest Ecosystems (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Introduction to Forest Ecology and Tree Biology; The Basics of Silvicultural Practice; The Ecology of Forests in Hawai‘i; Forest Water Quality and Erosion Control; Managing Woodlands for Wildlife—The Basics of Habitat. Field session: Characterizing Forest Sites and Reading the Landscape; Prescribing and Marking an Intermediate (or regeneration)

Evening of Day 1 (7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)
Methods of Buying and Selling ; An Introduction to Timber Sale Contracts

Day 2 (May 21, Tuesday): Equipment Handling and Safety (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Timber Harvesting; Accidents and How to Avoid Them (Participants share experiences); Felling & Limbing Techniques ( 20 min. Video); Discussion; Sensible Wood Cutting Tips ( 25 min. Video); Discussion; Chainsaw Maintenance Tips—Keeping the Chain Sharp!; Essential Safety Gear; Making Safety First

Evening of Day 2 (7:00 p.m. – 9:15 p.m.)
Reporting Income and Expenses from Timber Sales (A brief overview of the application of IRS rules as they apply to timber-related income and expenses.); Prospective of Logger Credentials and Certification in Hawai‘i

Day 3 (May 22, Wednesday): Professionalism in Forestry (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Professionalism in Forestry; Communication and Advocacy; The Sustainable Forestry Initiative; Important Forestry Issues in Hawai‘i; Questions & Comments; Ethics in Forestry; Case Studies in Ethics—Small groups will discuss and resolve ethical questions relating to relationships and transactions with two different groups: Woodland Owner & Log Buyers; Introduction to Personal Liability; Working With Private Owners

Days 4 & 5 (May 23, Thursday and May 24, Friday): Training the Instructors & Brainstorming
Course debriefing; Future direction of harvester education in Hawai‘i; Other states’ certification experiences; Developing standards for certification and maintaining certification
