FIRST ANNUAL AG CONFERENCE SETS A HIGH STANDARD
The Agricultural Conference 2002 held last Thursday, October 24, at the Sheraton Waikiki, was the first of what is hoped to become an annual meeting. As such, it set an excellent precedent for future meetings. From the mornings keynote speaker, John Ikerd, to Senator Dan Inouyes luncheon keynote address, to the morning and afternoon breakout sessions, the day was filled with good presentations. The theme of the meeting was Changing Times: Creating Opportunities in Agriculture. The focus was primarily on direct marketing within the Hawaii marketplace. About 250 attended the full day, and about 500 attended the luncheon.
One of the luncheons highlights was honoring Big Island rancher Monty Richards for his lifetime of dedicated service to agriculture, the state, and the university.
The meeting was co-sponsored by the Agricultural Leadership Foundation, the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, and CTAHR. Many people were instrumental in making the day a success. From CTAHR, I extend my congratulations especially to Dick Bowen, Kent Fleming, and Cathy Chan-Halbrendt.
Next years meeting organizers will have a hard act to follow.
CTAHR OPEN HOUSE WAS A ROUSING SUCCESS
About 300 Oahu high school students spent a jampacked three hours at a CTAHR open house on Friday, October 25. From all accounts, the open house was a huge success. Students and their teachers came away excited, intrigued, and impressed by the range of opportunities offered to them by CTAHRs six departments. Twenty-eight stations representing all six departments were set up throughout the college.
Allene Chun, student services specialist in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs, had four goals for the open house: communicate enthusiasm for the work CTAHR does; demonstrate pride in our college; project a welcoming face to the student visitors; and emphasize the opportunities CTAHR offers to virtually anyone. The enthusiastic response of the students and their teachers confirms that those goals were met.
Many, many thanks to all throughout the college who participated. We know that it took time away from your usual activities. On the other hand, if we attracted even 30 students out of the 300 who attended, the effort will have been well worth while. Thanks, too, to Allene and her staff for a job well done.
NOVEMBER 4 IS NEXT BROWN BAGS TO EXCELLENCE MEETING
The remaining three Brown Bags to Excellence meetings, November 4, November 18, and December 2, promise to be interesting and useful. Patricia Millen, from Leeward Community College, will concentrate on incorporating computers and the internet into your instructional model. All three meetings will be held in Ag Science III, 12:30-1:30 p.m., in the 2nd floor computer lab.
