AGRICULTURE TO BE A FOCUS AT THE END OF OCTOBER
I hope you all have marked your calendars for the many agriculture related activities during the last week of October. Wednesday, October 23, is a SARE-sponsored meeting on marketing of agricultural products. Thursday, October 24, is Agricultural Conference 2002, the first of what is hoped to become an annual event. This year it will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Agricultural Leadership Foundation. Immediately on the heels of the conference, Friday and Saturday, October 25-26, the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation will hold its annual convention and farm tour. All three events will be held in the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

There should be something for just about everyone who is interested in Hawaii agriculture. I hope many of you are planning to attend at least some of the scheduled events.

Go to http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/ctahr2001/AgConference/ for downloadable brochures and registration information about Agricultural Conference 2002.

LEAN CONCEPTS WORKSHOP OFFERED
Most of you have heard by now of the Hawaii Manufacturing Extension Program, which recently joined forces with CTAHR under the umbrella of a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The program has changed its name--it is now called Innovative Solutions--and it is offering a workshop to acquaint CTAHR faculty, especially Extension agents and specialists, with one of its linchpin concepts, that of "lean" techniques to improve existing businesses. The techniques help companies transform themselves by improving productivity, reducing lead time, improving quality, and reducing space requirements.

Not only will attendees learn the lean concept, they will also be asked for ideas on how to tailor the concept for application to agribusinesses.

The workshop will be held at the Stan Sheriff Arena, Room 105, Wednesday, October 23, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. To register, contact Bill Wiedmann at 808-383-0194 or wiedmann@hawaii.edu.
