YOU’RE ALL INVITED TO A CHRISTMAS PARTY
CTAHR administration invites everyone to a college-wide Christmas party to be held Friday, December 20, 3:00-5:00 p.m., in Gilmore 212. Last year, you may recall, we held the party in the Campus Center. It was a great success, and we vowed that it would begin a yearly tradition. But we think Gilmore will be more accessible and more conducive to a relaxed, happy gathering. We realize, Neighbor Islanders, that it’s hard to take us up on these invitations, but we want you to know that you’re all invited, too. If you happen to be on Oahu that afternoon, please plan to stop by and help us eat the food and drink the drinks and welcome the season.

To give us an idea of how many to expect, please drop Gloria Wong a line (acadaff@ctahr.hawaii.edu) or give her a call at 956-6997 just to let her know that you plan to attend. Please note: this is not a potluck. We’ll provide the goodies. All you need to do is show up in good spirits.

CTAHR REPRESENTED ON CHANCELLOR’S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
I am privileged to be among the first of the deans and directors selected to serve on Manoa Chancellor Peter Englert’s Manoa Management Executive (MME), which will meet with him weekly. My term will be one year. Others named to serve are Dick Dubanoski (dean, College of Social Sciences), also one year; Chuck Hayes (dean, College of Natural Sciences), six months; Carl-Wilhelm Vogel (director, Cancer Research Institute), six months. Hayes and Vogel will rotate off in six months and be replaced by others among the deans and directors. Thereafter, two members will rotate off and two new members come aboard every six months. Other members of the MME include the vice president for student affairs (Doris Ching); vice chancellor for academic affairs (Karl Kim); vice chancellor for administration, finance, and operations (Rodney Sakaguchi); vice chancellor for research and graduate education (Peter Englert, interim); assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs (Denise Konan); director of public affairs (Jim Manke); administrative assistant to the chancellor (Jean Imada); chair of the Manoa Faculty Senate (Mike Foreman); University librarian (Diane Perushek); and director of intercollegiate athletics (Herman Frazier).

Members of the MME will be asked to advise the chancellor on matters of practice and policy.

THIRD ROUND OF PRIORITY STAFFING IS COMPLETE
Department chairs and county administrators were notified earlier this week that the third round of priority staffing is complete. Because of budgetary constraints, we were able to fund only three new positions: veterinarian, assistant/associate professor, HNFAS; land inventory/interpretation/ evaluation, assistant/associate professor, NREM; landscape management, assistant/associate specialist, TPSS. Also funded were two existing positions: extension agent, assistant/associate, east Oahu County; assistant to county administrator, APT, Hawaii County.

As in rounds one and two, these positions were selected through a lengthy process. First, departments created lists of positions and prioritized them. Those prioritized lists were sent to administration, collated, and circulated to department chairs and county administrators. At a monthly leadership committee meeting, chairs and county administrators discussed the top two positions in each department and county. The associate deans and I selected what we considered to be the top three priority positions and presented the preliminary list at the next leadership meeting. After further discussion, the preliminary list became the final list.

Position descriptions for these positions will be posted as soon as possible. It is hoped the positions will be filled in time for the 2003-2004 academic year.

RTRF FUNDS DISTRIBUTED TO DEPARTMENTS AND COUNTIES
Ruddy Wong sent a memo last Friday to department chairs and county administrators to announce this year’s allocation of RTRF funds (grant overhead money). The college received $232,309. This is $25,352 more than we received last year. Ten percent is kept for administrative purposes, and the rest is distributed to units on the basis of their grants and contracts. If you are interested in knowing how much your unit received, check with your unit administrator.

LONG-AWAITED LEI BOOK WILL BE HERE NEXT MONTH
Still shopping for Christmas? Jim Hollyer's newest publication, Growing Plants for Hawaiian Lei, makes the perfect gift for all those hard-to-shop-for plant enthusiasts! This 280-page, full-color book will retail for $17, but members of CTAHR can purchase them for $12 each! Because they are due to arrive mid-January, PIO will issue you a special gift card for each copy you purchase from now until then. Give the cards out for Christmas, and we will notify you as soon as the books arrive. You can either pick them up or have them delivered to your gift card recipients! Use this form to place your order: http://www2.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/forms/LBForm.pdf. Cash and checks only, please. We are not able to accept credit card payments.

Questions? Contact Dale Uno at 956-7325 or duno@hawaii.edu.

SPEAKING OF BOOKS AND CHRISTMAS . . .
On the subject of Christmas books, you all should have received last week Linda Arthur’s message about her new book, The Art of the Aloha Shirt. Linda will sell you the hardback book for $15 (normally $20) with proceeds going to support the CTAHR Historic Costume Collection. This book, too, would make a great Christmas present, *and* you can get it autographed by the author! Linda will be in town until December 13. You can stop by Miller Hall, Room 208, to pick up your book, or leave a message with Linda and she’ll leave your signed copy with the FCS office staff for you to pick up at your convenience. Make your checks payable to CTAHR Historic Costume Collection.

RON WALL AUTHORS A NEW BOOK
Ron Wall, specialist in family economics in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, has just published a new book titled Financial Counseling in Practice: A Practical Guide for Leading Others to Financial Wellness. It is available for $29.95 through the UH Bookstore and online from amazon.com. It is primarily aimed at professionals who counsel others on personal finances, but Ron believes it will also be of use to ministers, coaches, and parents. TAILGATE PARTY AT UGC WAS A WINNER
About 100 CTAHR faculty and staff, advisors, and alumni attended the tailgate party at the Urban Garden Center November 23. Of those, more than half went to see the UH/University of Cincinnati football game, which turned out to be more exciting than anyone expected. I think everyone who attended the party had a good time and enjoyed good food. Those who went to the game were treated to a hard-fought UH win. You couldn’t ask for a better script!

Organizing such an affair takes many people, and I extend my thanks to them all, but most particularly to Harriet Iwamura and Kelvin Shoji for their long hours and hard work. Your care and attention really paid off and was appreciated. Thanks, too, to Dale Sato and the team of UGC volunteers and to the Office of Academic and Student Affairs staff and volunteers. As always, they came through and made the day special.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GOPALAKRISHNAN
Last week, Marlene Hapai sent an announcement that the 2003 CTAHR Ka Pouhana (mentor) Award goes to Chennat Gopalakrishnan, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management. I want to extend my personal congratulations to Dr. Gopalakrishnan for this well-deserved recognition of his work with students. It is especially meaningful that he was nominated by several of his graduate students. When you see Gopal, let him know that his efforts are appreciated. He and the other outstanding nominees for the award make a CTAHR education special.

ANNUAL NARRATIVE AND CRIS REPORTS MISSING
Each year at this time, you are asked to submit two reports: an annual narrative report and a CRIS report. The deadline for the annual narrative reports was October 15 and that for the CRIS reports was November 15. Many thanks to the large numbers of you who have filed your reports. Unfortunately, however, some of you (nearly 50 annual narratives and about 70 CRIS reports) are delinquent. It is very important that you take the time now to meet these two responsibilities.

You can file both on line at nearly the same web site. Go to http://www2.ctahr.hawaii.edu/internal_val.asp. For annual narratives, scroll down to "On-Line Report," "Annual Narratives—Add/Update Individual Reports." If you have technical questions about how to submit, contact Elsie Kawamura at syselsie@ctahr.hawaii.edu. Content questions should go to Cathy Chan-Halbrendt (chanhalb@hawaii.edu).

For CRIS reports, scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen to "Other Guidelines/Downloads," "CRIS AD-421 Instructions (Updated 10/15/2002)." Direct any questions to Walter Harada (haradaw@hawaii.edu), Jan Tatsuguchi (tatsuguchij@ctahr.hawaii.edu), or Terri Hee (heet@ctahr.hawaii.edu).

CATTLE INDUSTRY MEETING SET FOR DECEMBER 18
An all day (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) meeting of representatives of the state’s cattle industry will be held Wednesday, December 18, at the DOA Plant Quarantine Conference Room, 1849 Auiki Street, Honolulu. The meeting is titled "Create Opportunities for Hawaii’s Cattle Industry." Its purpose is to explore ways to push the industry forward. The cattle industry has potential to be a leader in revitalizing all of Hawaii agriculture. I urge anyone who is interested to attend and contribute his or her ideas and energy to the discussion.

Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting, but we would like a count of attendees for planning purposes. Please RSVP to Arlene Garcia (808-956-8234 or fax 808-956-9105) by today’s end. For more information about the meeting, contact Linda Cox, lcox@hawaii.edu, 808-956-7602.

HISTORY OF CTAHR AVAILABLE ON LINE
Are you ever curious about the history of this college? You may know that we were the first unit of the University of Hawaii when it opened its doors in 1907, but do you know much about us between then and the mid-1990s? Here’s your chance to find out. Wally Mitchell, the late entomologist, wrote a history of CTAHR that has been posted on the college’s web site. It will give you a good overview of where we stood just a few short years ago. You can find the history at: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/ctahr2001/AboutUs/Mitchell_History/overview.html

Enjoy your reading!
