Aina
While hiking along Nuuanu Stream to Kapena Falls, members and parents
of the Lucky Cloverbuds 4-H club not only were able to experience the
beauty of our island but also learned the importance of taking care of
the land. They share their thoughts and reflections through these two
poems:
Kapena Falls
Climbing rocky boulders, steep trails to walk,
Seeing the petroglyphs behind bars was a shock!
Rubbish in the graveyards, picking up the trash,
Dear Mr. Moore didn’t have to slash,
Beauty near the highway hidden so well,
Kapena Falls below – one could never tell,
Hiking along the stream, swinging on banyan roots,
Beautiful tall trees and smells that didn’t suit,
Water pipes discovered, river rocks to jump on,
A trail leading up to where we came up from,
Peeping in Mauna Ala where the royalty lay,
Learning what the Hawaiians did in their day,
We had fun learning and helping Nu’uanu,
Where wonderful memories refresh me and you.
4-H Reflections
A walk along Nu’uanu stream
By our 4-H service-learning team,
Learning about its history and land
And petroglyphs on rocks so grand,
Taking photos of Kapena’s beauty,
Reminding us of our ohana duty,
Let’s keep the aina alive and well,
So Hawaii continues to be
A great place to dwell.
