President's Message

Aloha 4-H Members and Leaders,

Another school year has flown by and I hope you all studied hard and got great grades!  SUMMER is here and you deserve to relax and have FUN!!!

I'm looking forward to meeting the newly elected Executive Board members at the next meeting and to share some of the past challenges and accomplishments with the new officers.  I'm sure this year will be filled with many awesome lessons in leadership.

The final event for the year, is the upcoming Achievement Banquet, where all of the clubs get together to fellowship, enjoy a nice meal and celebrate the success of community service, awards earned and lessons 'learned by doing'. I feel everyone has grown so much  and  I am so proud of all of the 'keiki' from cloverbuds to seniors.  Please keep your eyes open for the registration details.

For now, I hope you enjoy your time traveling, hanging at the beaches or malls, seeing the new blockbuster movies or just sleeping in:-).  Just remember while you're having fun to stay safe and choose to do the right thing!

E Ola Pono,
Kyrra Lau-Eglinton

Hawaii 4-H Alumni Scholarship

Congratulations to Mauricio Renon of the Farrington FCCLA 4-H Club who was awarded the 4-H Alumni Weinberg Scholarship.  Mauricio has been an active 4-H member participating in the Oahu County Food Show winning blue and red ribbons for his Macadamia Nut Torte, Smoke Oyster Spread, and the Ham and Cheese Pastry Puff.  He was an escort for our female participants in the annual Oahu County Fashion Show held at the University of Hawaii Art Auditorium; and this year he was on the score keeping auditors committee. His memorable events were Ahaolelo and Oahu County Camp where he hike at night, and roasted and ate s’mores.

As president of the Farrington FCCLA 4-H Club, Mauricio led his 116 members to achieve state and district medals and ribbons, complete community service hours, and fundraise to support their activities.  He has attended the national leadership conference in Chicago, Illinois in 2010 winning a gold medal for his Chapter Showcase project, and will attend his second national conference in Anaheim this summer with his Focus on Children project, practicing to win another gold medal.

We wish him much success in all of his future endeavors.

4-H Ahaolelo

Back to Basics is the theme for Ahaolelo 2011, July 19 – 21 on the University of Hawaii Manoa campus. The seven 4-H members on the planning committee are certain those who attend will enjoy having fun with other members from all of the islands while learning, exploring campus, meeting new friends and socializing during the banquet and dance. The conference is offering a variety of workshops including acquaponics, animal science, collegiate 4-H, bullying, food and nutrition, oceanography and social media just to mention a few.

A trip to Coconut Island is being offered to give the Ahaolelo participants hands on experience with preserving the ocean environment of our island. University of Hawaii faculty and students will join 4-H leaders and members in presenting workshops that include activities for members to take home and use with other members in their clubs.

The registration fee for the conference is $275. Check with your county 4-H extension educator to determine if you are eligible. High School aged members including those who have just completed the eighth grade and those who have just graduated from high school are eligible to attend. Alumni, parents and other adults are welcome to volunteer to be a chaperone and conference assistant.

The Ahaolelo registration form can be found on the Hawaii 4-H web page @ http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/4h/forms/Ahaolelo_registrationForm.pdf

Registration forms and checks should be mailed to your county extension office. The checks are payable to a county 4-H organization determined by each county office.

Registrations are due by midnight, Wednesday, June 22.

SCP's Iron Chef Competition

Aloha from Halawa!  The PACT/Puuwai Momi Community and Kuhio Park Terrace Teen Programs invite you to our 4th Annual Iron Chef event.   Thanks to the Oahu 4-H Food Show, we mixed a little of the Food Show with the popular “Iron Chef” show.  The cook off will be held on Friday, June 24, 2011 at the Kuhio Park Terrace Gym.  Doors will open from 11:15 am and the program will run from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm.   Teams of 5 youth that will create a dish that includes a secret ingredient.

Last month, our Iron Chef participants attended a workshop with guest speakers Aunty Rhoda Yoshino who talked about nutrition, food groups, and what to look for on the research section (thank you to 4-H Oahu County’s Food Show for a little thought into this part!)  We also had Dexter Kishida from Kokua Hawaii Foundation who went over food safety and sanitation. Finally, we had Executive Chef Aurelio Garcia of Sam Choy’s Breakfast, Lunch & Crab share some of his expertise in plating various dishes with Sour Pork Soup with Tamarind, Pipikaula Salad with a Caesar Tamarind Dressing, Seared Lamb Chops with a Tamarind Glaze and two-potato hash brown, and a Tamarind Crème Brulee.

On May 31st, Iron Chef participants were also invited to Iron Chef Morimoto’s restaurant, Morimoto Waikiki, for a plating and presentation by Morimoto himself.  Go to http://www.staradvertiser.com/multimedia/20110601_Island_Images_Chef_Morimoto_demonstration.html for some pictures!

If you have any questions or if you’re interested in attending, feel free to contact me at 488-6705 or chanakaw@hawaii.edu.  I won’t have an Iron Chef team this year.  However, the 4-H Halawians Tech Club will develop live coverage and document it for a future video.

Annual Military 4-H Leader Recognition

On May 10 at Schofield School Age building, about 20 4-H leaders from around Oahu gathered for a morning of hands-on science & recognition for their efforts.

This year, in addition to the regular 4-H 101 training, Cooperative Extension has provided topic specific trainings for leaders, based on the National 4-H program focus: nutrition & healthy living (Nov 2010), citizenship (Jan 2011) and this past month, science.  Leaders chose from three activities to learn so they might take some science back to their clubs: Making Monster Flowers from the Junior Master Gardener Literature in the Garden curriculum; Rolling Along Lesson on Friction from Junk Drawer Robotics or Our Carrying Capacity from Exploring Your Environment 4-H curriculum.

After our mini-training and breakfast snacks, leaders were awarded general leadership awards and special recognition based on nominations. In all this year, 80 military staff were recognized for their efforts in leading 4-H clubs from Hawaii, Japan, Kwajalein and South Korea.  This is the most leaders we have ever recognized! Additionally, 24 new clubs were chartered this year.

Another OMK Family Camp Opportunity!

Hawaii Operation: Military Kids (OMK) and ACS Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) will be hosting a Family Camp for all families with youth who have lost a parent during combat or training.  This camp will give these children of our fallen heroes the opportunity to meet other youth who have dealt with a loss, while being provided with the support and tools to help them sustain during the difficult times in their lives.  The focus of the camp will be on resiliency, stress management, nurturing relationships, self-esteem and peer buddy building.  In addition, youth and their parents/caregivers will learn about military and community resources to promote well-being.

This Family camp, which is open to youth and their families from all branches of service,
will be held on July 15-17, 2011 at Camp Erdman on the North Shore of Oahu.  Some of the
site’s recreational activities include hiking, odyssey and ropes course, swimming, archery, giant
swing, and kayaking.  Camp Erdman is a full residential facility that provides all meals and
lodging.  OMK and OSD will support all costs for camp, thus each camp participant is responsible
only for their packing items.  We also want to encourage neighbor island families whom qualify for
this camp to attend as airfare will be at no charge.

If you know of a family that may qualify for this camp, please share this information with them.
For more information about the OMK/SOS Family Camp or to apply, contact Jennifer Koranyi at 808-438-1955/9285 or email Jennifer.koranyi@us.army.mil.  For general information about OMK, contact KiKi Yoshimoto at omk@ctahr.hawaii.edu.

Hawaii State Fair

July 9 – 10, 2011
Kualoa Ranch

This year, the 4-H Farm Fair has been renamed and relocated to the Hawaii State Fair at Kualoa Ranch on the Windward side of Oahu.  Plans are being made to highlight our livestock 4-H’ers from across the State and their animals with their show and sales on Saturday, July 9.

The Hawaii State Fair will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10, with many events and special interest areas planned.  The hours are 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday.

We have many opportunities and responsibilities for our 4-H’ers and 4-H family and friends to help with putting on the Fair.  Below is a list of the different areas that we need volunteers to help with.  A shift schedule should be ready in the next week or so, and we wanted to get this information out to everyone as soon as possible so you can plan your participation!  Please let us know by Friday, June 17, if you or your club is interested in helping/participating in any of the following:

  1. Parking (3-hour shifts, 6 adults/teens per shift).  Help direct vehicle traffic to the parking areas.  At least one Kualoa Ranch worker will be coordinating the parking efforts on both days.

  2. Admissions (3-hour shifts, 5 adults/teens per shift).  Collect entrance fee and issue entrance tickets, collect tickets, and runner.

  3. 4-H Information/Activity Tables (4-hour shifts, 4 or more 4-H’ers and adults per shift, all ages welcome!).  Monitor displays, chat up visitors, promote 4-H, and lead hands-on learning activities for visiting youth.  Please contact Mrs. Wanda Kohashi, Warriors Club Leader, at wkohashi@hawaii.edu to volunteer to help in this area.

**We would like all clubs to create a club display board (3-panel, 48” x 36”) with photos and captions of their members, projects, and activities that we can set up at the Fair.  Be sure to include Club Name, Island and Location, and School(s) attending.  Include a contact name and information (e-mail and telephone number) on the back of the board so that the boards can be returned to the clubs.  Neighbor island clubs, contact your County Extension 4-H Agent to coordinate getting your club board to/from Oahu.

  4. Demonstrators/Entertainers (musical, food, craft, project, etc.) (10 – 15 minutes maximum, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Sunday, depending on the number of interested 4-H'ers and other Fair entertainers).  The Entertainment Committee is working on securing numerous people/groups to provide entertainment during the Fair.  We will also be able to show off the many talents of our 4-H’ers as they practice their public speaking, performing, and demonstration skills!

If any of our 4-H’ers are interested in providing some form of entertainment during the listed time periods (please be flexible!), we are looking for 4-H musicians, vocalists, drama groups, food preparation/craft/project demonstrators, poetry readers, story tellers, etc.  Demonstration costs for supplies, materials, handouts, and samples will be reimbursed.  Please contact Mrs. Kimberly Lockwood, Keyblade Bearers’ 4-H Club Leader, at mlockwood1@hawaii.rr.com to get on the list of participants!

  5. Country Market Vendors (4 hour shifts, by club, at least one adult and one 4-H’er).  Tables will be available at no charge for our 4-H clubs to sell homemade food/gifts as club fundraisers.  Start thinking about what kind of homemade items you would like to make/bake/cook to sell during the fair.  For instance, cookies, brownies, bar cookies, cakes, party mix, trail mix, and other snacks; crafts, artwork, etc.  Label and individually wrap all food items.  Clubs are responsible for bringing change and collecting their own money.  Please practice good/safe food handling techniques for preparation, packaging, and storage before and at the site.  Contact Mrs. Wanda Kohashi, Warriors Club Leader, at wkohashi@hawaii.edu or call 247-0421 to participate in the Country Market.

  6. Oahu Host Families.  If your family is willing and able to host fellow 4-H’ers and/or their families so that they can participate in the Hawaii State Fair, contact Mrs. Wanda Kohashi, Warriors Club Leader, at wkohashi@hawaii.edu or call 247-0421 as soon as possible.

We will be sending out more information directly to our 4-H club leaders and County Extension 4-H Agents as the event dates get closer.  Please share this information with your 4-H’ers, families, and friends so that everyone has the opportunity to help support this event, our Livestock 4-H’ers, and the Hawaii 4-H Youth Development Program.  We will make all necessary arrangements to enable our neighbor island 4-H’ers to participate in any of the above areas.  Just let us know!

If you have any questions regarding the Hawaii State Fair, please contact Dr. Gary Heusel, Hawaii State 4-H Leader, at heuselg@ctahr.hawaii.edu or 956-9380; Mrs. Wanda W. Kohashi, State 4-H Program Specialist, at wkohashi@hawaii.edu or 247-0421, or your County Extension 4-H Agent.  So that we can start to schedule volunteers/participants, please contact us by Friday, June 17, 2011.

Warriors Take Next Step

On April 17, 2011 some of the Warriors visited the Next Step homeless shelter in Kakaako and handed out goody bags. The children were ecstatic when we gave them the toys and treats. We also got the opportunity to talk to many of the children and their parents. Amy’s Dad brought an ambulance. The kids got the opportunity to tour the ambulance and learn about the different things that it contained. Also, the Warriors had the chance to play games outside of the shelter with some of the kids.

From this I learned that there are people less fortunate than me. I feel very appreciative that I have a house. They have to live in 5 x 5 spaces, and no ideas where there next meal will come from. It was an eye opening experience. These are people that work hard to earn a living and one day leave the homeless shelter. The adults spend their days looking for work and ways to earn money while the children spend weekdays at school. After school, the children have tutors to help them with their homework and to make sure they maintain good grades. It’s times like this that make me grateful and want to give more to people in need.
