Aloha 4-H Members and Leaders,
WOW!!! Another year has flown by, but not without many memories to reminisce and reflect upon. I still remember the very 1st 4-H Pot of Gold meeting I attended. It was awkward, but lots of fun; we socialized over dinner, said the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H pledge, covered upcoming 4-H events and ended w/ a craft project. Little did I know this would turn into 6 years of commitment to this awesome organization.
One of the best accomplishments was earning a 'Health Rocks' Trainer Certification. Armed with this knowledge, I created a game that would make it FUN for children and teens to learn about making 'Healthy Lifestyle' choices. In the last 3 years, coordination of numerous 4-H volunteers allowed us to serve the community at the American Heart Association Heart Walk, Bishop Museum Kids Fest, and the State Capitol's Children &Youth Day.
The past 2 years as Oahu County 4-H Executive Board President, presented a challenging journey of fantastic opportunities which culminated in many valuable and rewarding experiences. Running the board meetings and moving towards collaboration w/ the rest of the committee was an exercise in patience, listening and understanding. Overseeing the council meetings gave me a chance to hone public speaking skills and 'think on my toes', in front of a mixed audience. I was always surprised by the variety of thought processes and expression of opinions. I definitely grew to become a more flexible person in this leadership role.
Actual responsibilities end this year, however in my final 4-H year, I look forward to being a part of the board meetings and hope to lend a sense of continuity to the 'New 'executive board!
Thank you Aunty Rose for nurturing and encouraging me to develop the skills and character to become a dedicated community and organization contributor... Thank you to the board members for allowing me to walk alongside you and at times provide direction...
Enjoy the rest of your Summer Break and I hope to see you at the 4-H Recognition Banquet!

County 4-H Livestock Show
I had the privilege of filling in for Steve Nagano at the Oahu County Livestock Show in June. The setting at Kawailoa Ranch on the North shore brought back many familiar memories of my beginning years as an Extension Agent and attending the County Shows. The youth who were 4-H’ers then are now running the show or have children in the program. It was really nice to be there and see everyone. Thanks to Bridget Napier who ran the show, got the auctioneer and assisted with getting buyers. Also thank you to the leaders, family members and to the 4-Hers who all participated in this event. The pot luck lunch was great.
Congratulations to the following 4-Hers who received awards for their animals:

Ahaolelo 2011
This year there will be 22 4-H’ers and 3 chaperons from Oahu County and the military program participating in the Ahaolelo Conference…Back to Basics: Youth to Communities, July 19 – 21, 2011 at the University of Hawaii. 4-H’ers from across the state will be attending and participating in various workshops such as social media for learning and sharing, snorkeling, exploring the shoreline and reefs and learning the behind the scenes at the aquarium, bullying and substance abuse. The youth will also participate in various community service projects on Oahu such as planting trees, painting murals, visiting a senior center and working at the arboretum. 4-Hers can also serve on the communication team led by Becky Settlage who will report on the happenings of the conference.
This year the 4-H’ers will be honoring Mr. Dean Okimoto, Chairman and President of Nalo Farms. He is the 2011 Ali’i. The 4-Hers will bring produce and products from their respective islands to honor him.
The agenda for Ahaolelo is packed full with fun and educational experiences for all the 4-Hers, as well as, the leaders. Staying in Frear Hall will provide the 4-Hers an understanding of how it feels like living in the dorms and eating in the cafeteria is quite an experience. Great we have so many 4-Hers participating just before they have to return to school, hope some of the delegates will share their Ahaolelo experiences in the next news letter.
4-H Achievement and Leader's Recognition Banquet
The Cloverkids 4-H club is busily organizing and preparing for the Annual Achievement and Recognition Banquet. It is set for August 6, 2011 at the Mandalay Restaurant in downtown Honolulu. The luncheon will be a combination of dim sum and other Chinese dishes. More information will be coming out real soon. Hope all the clubs can make it to this event to end the 4-H year and honor those who have received awards throughout the year. Remember all leaders your lunch will be paid for, so please come and enjoy the event.

Tasty Tidbits!
Is Haagen-Dazs really all that much better than Meadow Gold? Well, at our June meeting, the Warriors found out. We did an activity called “What’s in a Name” from the Tasty Tidbits project book. The main idea was that there are three distinct types of supermarket brands: National, Store, and Generic. We conducted taste tests on corn, ice-cream and cola. There were similar results in all tests, with varied preference as to taste, but the cheapest brands, all generic, being the overall favorite. There were, however, some tasters that favored the national brands despite the price gap such as Haagen-Dazs being three times more than Meadow Gold. The moral of this project is that by sampling the different brands of foods, you can find products that suit your taste as well as your wallet.

SCP and PACT Community Teen Program's 4th Annual Iron Chef
The 4th Annual Iron Chef was held on Friday, June 24, 2011 at the Kuhio Park Terrace Gym. Visualize 8 teams of 2-5 youth and teens preparing their dishes for four judges. The secret ingredient? Tamarind.
TV personalities Kirk Matthews and Linda Coble were the Master and Mistress of Ceremonies and started the whole event with introducing the judges and teams. We were fortunate enough to have 4-H Extension Agent Rose Saito, be a judge with Greg Andrasick (former Teen Program Staff), Sean Spriggs (youth and community collaborator), and Chef Jevic Acain from Morimoto Waikiki. The SCP Through SCP community site at Puuwai Momi Community Teen Program had three teams who entered in the event: Chipotle Chicas, Happy Go Lucky, and Pretty Boy Dougiez. Many of the members of these teams have members from the 4-H Clubs:
Halawa Divas: Jaysha Militante-Hanamaikai, Nalani Montes, Tatyanna Bontog
Puuwai Momi Leadership: Jayleen Jud, Shana Ann Torres, Shanice Cullen, Jonah Routon, Dominique Bontog, Maryann Bontog
Halawa Aces (soon to be a club): Tikson Enos, Kally Kelek
In addition, the 4-H Halawian Tech Club played a big role behind the scenes, before and during the whole event. They took care of the photography, videography, recipe book, and short video. Club members Hulali Kinilau, Cheyenne Cullen, Jorey Cullen, and Keala Militante-Hanamaikai.
The Happy Go Lucky won 1st place with their Shrimp with Avocado and Cucumber Salad and the Chipotle Chicas won 2nd place with their Chipotle Chicken in the Appetizer division. As for the Pretty Boy Dougiez, they were a last minute team that only practiced their dish, Tamarind Chicken Stir Fry, on the day of the event. The other category, main dish, had Tamarind Bouillabaisse as 1st Place (Boo Yah Boyz) and Burgers with Tangy Tamarind Sauce and Red Onion Relish as 2nd Place (B2B—Between 2 Buns) from the KPT Teen Center.

Warriors Take the Next Step
Last Christmas, the Warriors thought: “How can we help others?” “We could use our Christmas money!” Instead of exchanging Christmas gifts, the Warriors 4-H Club decided to use the money from our secret Santa activity to help our community. There were many other worthy causes, such as buying goats for the needy in Africa, but we decided to keep it within the community. We put the money towards making a meal for the people at the Next Step Homeless Shelter.
On June 29, 2011, the Warriors went to the shelter to feed the homeless. We served egg salad sandwiches, carrot sticks, chips, and brownies. The whole meal was prepared by the club members with minimal help from their parents. Hawaii Food Alliance (HFA) donated all the bread used to make the sandwiches. We learned about the importance of helping people who don’t have as many privileges as we do. The people at the shelter really appreciated the meal. This helped us become more grateful for the things we have. Besides feeding the homeless, the Warriors led crafts and body painting with the children that live in the shelter. They are normal children, but without a lot of the same opportunities as most people. By helping them, we can change the world, one egg salad sandwich at a time.
