President’s Message

Hey Everyone!

We are on our last month of the year, and may I say the busiest. So much Christmas shopping to do it’s like a zoo out there. Just this past week, Stacie Nakanishi, Dayna Domingo, and I arrived back from National 4-H Congress. We left on Thanksgiving Day and were joined with 12 other, fun and crazy delegates from the other islands, along with two fun loving leaders. We had a lot of fun and met so many new friends on this trip. This was such a wonderful, eye opening experience. I hope that all of you 4-H’ers will try your best to get to congress next year, that means turning in your 4-H Portfolio on time and believe me you will have a BLAST!. This month we also have our Fashion Show on the 2nd, Food Show workshop on the 7th and our Food Show forms are due on the 30th. The Food Show theme this year is Pot Luck, Local Foods and Kraft, this means that you may cook or bake anything you would like. This year’s Food Show workshop will be getting help from Mililani’s FCCLA club decorating holiday cookies, also joining us is the very talented Chef Henry “Shig Cop”.  I hope that everyone will be able to participate.Happy Holidays everyone.

Renni Fay Iwasa

PS:  Our next Council meeting will be on December 16, 2007 @UGC 3:30pm.

Fasion Show

The Oahu County 4-H Fashion Show held on December 2, was a very successful event thanks to chair club FCCLA whose advisor is Linda Uyehara.  The Hollywood theme of “Lights, Camera, Action” was well received by the audience.  Congratulations go to Maile Miki who won the Top In Show award for the senior division.  With the Hollywood theme, each participant walked down the red carpet onto the stage.  The show was awesome with lots of prom gowns.  The FCCLA members and Mrs. Claire Masumoto did a fantastic job decorating the stage.  Ai-Lynn Nguyen and Terence Vaquilar were great emcees.

The Just Us club prepared the high tea for lunch with food donations from all the clubs.  Sakaye Nomura did an excellent job of coordinating the tea and decorating the serving table with a Christmas look.

The following clubs did mini workshops:  Warriors, Just Us, FCCLA and Pot of Gold.  The mini workshops were a great idea, but we need to see how we can better utilize those workshops.

Thank you also goes to Pot of Gold for securing the judges, Cloverkids for registration and Aunties Gail and Erlene for helping with the scoring.  This year’s fashion show really turned out to be a “special event” for those who participated.

Health Rocks Workshop

Back in September a team of Kyrra Lau-Eglinton, Hannah Wong and Linda Lau AhHee participated in a workshop calledHealth Rocks. They learned key health messages and skills such as critical thinking, how to manage stress, how to handle peer pressure and how to communicate effectively.  Special emphasis is placed on tobacco use prevention.    The Health Rocks! Healthy life curricula series will allow participants to experience activities that help them learn and adopt many important skills and to teach others.
The two day workshop was held at the Pagoda Hotel.   As a result of the workshop, the team developed a plan of action to do a lesson in the community.  They applied for a grant from the Mississippi State University to assist them with the project.  They received a $250 grant to carry out their project.  Congratulations to Kyrra, Hannah and Aunty Linda for working on this project.

4-H Club Leaders' Federation of Hawaii Bylaws Revision

The Constitution Committee of the 4-H Club Leaders’ Federation of Hawaii has revised the current Constitution and Bylaws and has proposed that the Federation adopt the revised Bylaws at the next State Conference scheduled for April 4-5, 2008 in Maui.

The revisions were made so that the new Bylaws reflect what is currently being done, could be easily read, could be understood, are in proper order so that one can find things, are correct according to the Federation rule book RONR, and are in a modern and up-to-date language. The reorganizing of content and change of language does not affect anything that is currently being done within the Federation.

To review the revisions or if you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail Bertha Kaui, Federation Constitution Chair, at bkaui@earthlink.net by February 29, 2008.  Or, contact your county agent and he/she can forward the message to Bertha.
