President’s Message

Hey everyone!

I just came home from our 35th Oahu 4-H Food Show at Pearl City High School’s Cafeteria and it was great.  Once again there were many wonderful, delicious, and gorgeous looking foods and displays.  I have never seen so much talent in one place like this.  I think we may have some future culinary chefs in our 4-H organization.  This year we had Stacie Kohashi who took Top in Show for the Junior Division and Sara Hashizume who took it for the seniors.  Also, Stacie Nakashima took home a deserving $250 scholarship from Kraft and Hannah Wong won a $500 scholarship.  Good job to all of them and everyone who participated.  I would also like to thank everyone who helped with this year’s 35th food show; the Clover Kids, Pot of Gold, KPT Teens, Just Us, Farrington High school FCCLA, Warriors, Hawaii 4-H Alumni Association, Palisades FCE, Lynn Saito, Jeff Tom, and Uncle Walter Horikawa.  This Food Show could never been a success without the help from everyone.  Thank you.

Next month on February 22, we will be having our county camp and from the agenda I saw, it looks like it will be a weekend full of fun activities that no one could resist.  There will be a meeting on Friday and at that time we will be taking nominations for next year’s Executive Board.  If you are considering running for any position, please be serious about this.  As a member on the executive board, it is important to do your best and to get involved at the same time as having fun.  4-H is a great organization and has a good reputation for coming out with very successful alumni.  If anyone knows anyone interested in running, then let us know or come to camp and nominate them in person.  For anyone that is scared to run, please don’t be, it’s really fun and you get to learn so many new things that in the future will help you out so much.  You won’t regret it, I promise.  I hope to see everyone at the camp; I personally can’t wait to make some smores!

4-H Club Leaders’ Federation of Hawaii Bylaws Revision

The Constitution Committee of the 4-H Club Leaders’ Federation of Hawaii has revised the current Constitution and Bylaws and has proposed that the Federation adopt the revised Bylaws at the next State Conference scheduled for April 4-5, 2008 in Maui.

The revisions were made so that the new Bylaws reflect what is currently being done, could be easily read, could be understood, are in proper order so that one can find things, are correct according to the Federation rule book RONR, and are in a modern and up-to-date language.  The reorganizing of content and change of language does not affect anything that is currently being done within the Federation.

To review the revisions or if you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail Bertha Kaui, Federation Constitution Chair, at bkaui@earthlink.net by February 29, 2008.  Or, contact your county agent and he/she can forward the message to Bertha.

Hawaii 4-H To Be A Part of New Operation: Military Kids Project

The Hawaii 4-H Youth Development program will once again be actively involved in Operation: Military Kids (OMK).  Hawaii is one of 15 states that is being funded by the Office of Secretary of Defense and is part of the Joint Family Support Assistance Program (JFSAP) initiative.  Through this initiative, OMK will work to provide support and assistance to geographically dispersed youth and families of all military personnel in the state.  The Hawaii OMK team is now working with both Active Duty and Reserve components of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.  We are also trying to include other organizations as we have a lot of work to do and lots of youth/families to serve.

The new OMK initiative will include:
  • Mobile Tech Lab learning opportunities (so youth of deployed personnel can keep in touch with them electronically)

  • Educational programs-providing 4-H learning experiences at youth camps, Super Saturday events, Family Readiness Group meetings, etc.

  • Speak Out for Military Youth campaign-getting youth to help share experiences of what it is like to be a military youth

  • Babysitting workshops (many military families need help with child care when one family member is deployed)

  • Deployment training for educators and youth workers, and

  • Providing Hero Packs to youngsters with deployed parents.  The national project will send us the packs but we need to find groups willing to raise funds to purchase or obtain donations of things to fill the packs and write letters to the recipients.
We welcome any individual or group that would like to be a part of any of these efforts.  Please call 956-7196 or email nakatsuk@hawaii.edu to get involved or for more information.

We will attempt to keep the Hawaii 4-H program family informed of the needs and services of OMK through this newsletter.  We have a few exciting things in the works and look forward to having you involved in these efforts.  We will keep you posted!
