President’s Message

Hey 4-H'ers!

Wow, can you believe that we are almost through with this year?  Soon we will be electing our new board members.  I hope everyone can make it because this is one of the most important meetings that we ever have.  If you are running or interested in running but were not present at camp, you can still run, but you must be present in order to be voted.  This will also be our last council meeting with the present council board members.  This month we had our Communications Fair.  I would like to thank everyone who participated, the parents, Hannah Wong and her committee for making this event possible.  I hope to see all of you at the meeting.  This year is ending so fast, I really can't believe how fast time flies by!

4-H Year Almost Coming to an End

This past year Oahu County 4-H program started with the year round school system.  It was packed full of events and activities from the Executive Board retreat in July.  The Oahu County Council with an active Board did five Island wide community festivals, had three major events— Fashion Show, Food Show and Communications Fair and not to mention a camp, the Centennial Fair at the Urban Garden Center and a car wash.  It is still going full speed ahead with elections of the new board to be held this month, record books and the Achievement Banquet.  This year we will be graduating 8 seniors.  As we wind down the year, let’s continue to be involved with the program.  We have three more months to go.

Hawaii Military 4-H SAS Mini County Fair

During spring break the military 4-H clubs held their annual 4-H Spring Fling.  This year’s theme was a County Fair.  During the event 4-H participants exhibited projects that were completed this year.  The Music and Drama Club from Bennett Youth Center also performed to show off what they learned through their club work.  Helemano Military Reservation, Bennett Youth Center, Aliamanu Military Reservation and Catlin Club House 4-H clubs presented exhibits.  4-H’ers were given the opportunity to speak with a judge to discuss their exhibit and discuss 4-H.  After the festivities, the 4-H’ers participated in an awards presentation to recognize those that exhibited items, completed record books and those who participated in 4-H this year.  Great job military 4-H’ers!

Learning to Serve… at the National Guard Youth Camp

90 campers ages 7-18 years old took part in Operation: Military Kids/4-H sessions thanks to the efforts of a wonderful crew of 4-H volunteers and OMK partners.  Each of the sessions focused on serving – others and the community.

With the use of the mobile tech lab and KidsPix software, the 7-8 year olds created a “I Spy” book that they decided to share with children that stay at the Fisher House (military version of Ronald McDonald House). Army CYS Tech Specialist Sharon Delaney conducted this session with the help of Evan Kumasaki, student tech assistant.
4-H Read to Me volunteers Annette Wong and Janice Motoshige and their newly recruited helper Dennis Wong helped a group of 9-11 year olds create storybook aprons.  The group was not only able to complete 5 aprons but they also had time to use them to share their stories with the others.  Group members voted to share the aprons with a hospital serving children.
The second group of 9-11 year olds learned about ‘environments’ and in the process created 36 terrariums.  This session was led by military 4-H program assistant Elizabeth Cruz with gopher Erin Nakatsuka.  Patients at Tripler Hospital will be the lucky recipients of the terrariums.
“Home town Heroes” was the topic for the session for the middle schoolers facilitated by Liz Gocong, JFSAP/OMK Youth Program Specialist.  The campers in this group chose heroes to recognize and then created an awards presentation for the heroes in their group.
USDA/4-H Youth Specialist DeAnn Acosta led the last group, the high schoolers in a Speak Out for Military Kids session.  The campers selected messages on what it is like to be military kids and developed video scripts sharing these messages.

Other Opportunities

Attention MySpace, Xanga and FaceBook Users

The youth members of the Texas 4-H Technology Team have recently undertaken a research project to evaluate why young people (ages 8 to 21) are so interested in on-line social networks such as MySpace, Xanga, and FaceBook.  As part of their research project, they are conducting a survey and then will be presenting the findings at the 2008 Children, Youth, and Families at Risk Conference in San Antonio in May.

The team invites all young persons, ages 8 to 21, to go on-line and complete the survey.  The survey is totally anonymous and is hosted by a secure website.  The survey will take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

To complete the survey, visit the Texas 4-H Technology Team On-Line Community Survey.
