Hey 4-Hers --
We are going to get really busy this month, so get ready. This month we are starting to prepare for our Fashion Show coming up on December 2, 2007. But if you’re having trouble and getting confused, go to our Fashion Show workshop on November 2. Then on December 7, 2007 the Clover Kids will be holding a food show workshop at the Urban Garden Center. This will also be the time to ask us any questions about your food show worksheets that will be due on December 31st. So let’s get a head start on things so we can all participate on all the events. Remember that the holiday season is getting closer so start thinking of your favorite family recipes you know and love.
Hope you all had wonderful Halloween.
PS: Our next Council meeting will be on December 16, 2007 @ UGC 3:30pm.
Yours truly,
Renni Fay Iwasa

• Buttons! Buttons! Buttons!
How many of you have tons of old buttons stored in your sewing box or the newer ones that are used for scrapbook embellishments? The later usually comes prepackaged, color coordinated and in various sizes and designs. If you have an abundance of buttons, you have a gold mine for this bracelet making activity.
Since Maryknoll has been after me to do a bracelet workshop for the leader training that is coming up on November 30, 2007, I have come up with the idea of doing a button bracelet as seen in one of my Bead magazines. The skill level for making this bracelet is a level one, but it takes a little time to assemble the buttons. It has always been my passion to someday create an heirloom with my mother’s button collection. If you have lots of extra buttons, you may bring them to the workshop. Otherwise, I have a source to get buttons for you. One bracelet will use between 80 to 100 buttons. Also if you have extra size 8 and 11 seeded beads we could use them.
Other supplies needed if you have them are crimping pliers, round nose pliers, flat nose pliers and wire cutters. I will make kits of the supplies you need to assemble your bracelet. Please call Rose (622-4185) or Maryknoll (453-6053) if you plan on attending this training. I believe we will have a Japanese dinner prepared by Bernard Murata. I guarantee you that it should be a fun evening and all of you who will attend can use your imagination and create a “one-of-a-kind” bracelet.

• Certification of 4-H Groups Under the National 4-H Tax Exempt Status
As part of the new IRS reporting requirements, as a tax-exempt organization, National 4-H is now required to annually certify the list of subsidiary groups (4-H clubs and organizations) registered to use our National 4-H Group Exemption Number (GEN). If you go to the National 4-H Headquarters web site at: http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/library/4h_polregs.htm#tax you will see that there are four new fact sheets. Please download these fact sheets and read them carefully.
4-H will still have the tax- exempt status, but your club must be “chartered”. Two years ago we chartered most club and you should have a certificate indicating that your club is chartered. Each club/organization must also have a federal EIN number, which can be obtained by calling IRS or going online to: http://www.irs.gov and completing Form SS-4 “Application for Employer Identification Number.” Then, when you file your taxes in 2008, you will need to file the e-Postcard.
The Fact Sheet: “Electronic Filing Requirements for 4-H Groups” lists the different requirements for clubs/organizations based primarily on amount of money in the organization. So your club will need to be aware of these changes that are taking place.
Carol Ikeda will be sending the list of all clubs and affiliated organizations to National. If you want your club/organization to be included on this list, it might be a good idea to have your club enrolled before that December 1st deadline. It sounds like more paper work, but it needs to be done if we want to be in compliance.

• Super Saturday Event for Army Reserve Youth
The Army Reserves is once again planning a Super Saturday event for children while their parents participate in weekend drills. The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 8 at the Fort Shafter Flats. Volunteers are needed to provide an one hour educational experiences at 9:30 and then repeat the session at 10:30 or at 1:30 pm and then repeat the session at 2:30 pm. The sessions should be geared for children 7 – 12 years old. Ideally, it would be great to have 4-H members share what they are learning in their 4-H clubs.
Volunteers are also needed to help register the youngsters (at 8 am) and to run relay type games and other recreational activities in the afternoon.
Those interested are asked to contact C. Nakatsuka at 956-7196 or nakatsuk@hawaii.edu. Thank you!

• Community Service-Learning Projects
The Oahu County 4-H clubs were busy participating in several community projects going on since August. On August 4th the clubs assisted at the Annual Oahu Heart Walk at Ala Moana Beach with over 3000 participants. Then, on September 29th the 4-Hers set up Germ City and sold slices of ice-cold watermelon at the HSMA Island Fresh Fair at Kakaako Park with a crowd of about 3500 people. To start National 4-H Week on October 7 we had a booth at the Children and Youth Day at the State Capitol. We promoted the 4-H curriculum and had the kids make Potpourri to a crowd of about 30,000 people. Then, on October 21, the 4-Hers were at the Bishop Museum for Kids Fest with Germ City and about 4500 people participated in that event.
Thank you to all the clubs who participated in these events. It took a lot of manpower from the club leaders and 4-Hers to be present at these events. Just Us, Clover kids, Kapolei Explorers, Farrington FCCLA and Pot of Gold 4-H clubs were all involved with these projects. Special thanks goes to 4-H leader Becky Kanenaka whose passion in life is to have everyone washing their hands to keep clean and safe. She was instrumental in setting up Germ City at the two sites. It was a “good feeling” watching our 4-Hers interacting and explaining to the adults and kids as they taught these people new life skills.

Youth Service America (YSA) and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), U.S. Department of Justice are offering $2,000 grants to help organizations that have had a successful youth engagement experience to replicate effective practices to organizations in a broader network or coalition without a youth strategy. | • What Types of Service Interest You? |
Youth Service America is conducting a survey to figure out what type of service activities interest most individuals. There are many ways to volunteer successfully. Whether it is through indirect or direct action, advocacy or research, it is important that everyone is able to identify in his or her own category of volunteering or citizenship. Because there is no one right way to serve, it is important to promote various levels of engagement. By completing this one question survey, you will be helping Youth Service America to determine where most volunteers identify when it comes to service work.
