President’s Message

Hi Everyone!

     Happy Mother’s Day to all the dedicated leaders, agents and volunteers who have supported our 4-H program! Without your continued guidance, hard work and patience, the 4-H members would not have the wonderful opportunities and experiences to learn and grow. Thank you for being fantastic mothers to the 4-H membership; you advised us when we didn’t know what to do, reminded us when we didn’t do what we should, and always praised us for a job well done. I hope you all enjoy a relaxing and special Mother’s Day!

     Congratulations to the 2007-2008 Executive Board officers elected at the April council meeting! Look for Hannah’s article for the election results. I wish all the new officers the best in making the upcoming year the best 4-H year yet. Remember to take advantage of the opportunities 4-H provides because you will definitely “learn by doing”.

     I would like to express my congratulations to all the 4-Hers who participated in the Communications Fair held on April 29th. Everyone did a fantastic job sharing their visual and oral presentations. Thank you Clover Kids for an excellent job planning and coordinating this event!

     With a couple months remaining in the 4-H year, please make sure to submit you senior portfolios by May 15, attend the Achievement Banquet on June 30, and look for information on the Farm Fair scheduled for mid-July.

     Later this month on Memorial Day, I ask everyone share a moment to pray for the family and love ones of the victims of the recent Virginia Tech tragedy.

• Betty Z. Shimabukuro Scholarship

The drawing for the BZS baskets was held on Saturday, April 21 by the Executive Board at Camp Kokokahi. Congratulations to the following who won some very beautiful items.

• 4-H Volunteer Among Hawaii’s Best

Kendra Kawamura, a member of the Kauai 4-H program, was named one of Hawaii's top two youth volunteers for 2007 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. This nationwide awards program, conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, recognizes outstanding acts of volunteerism by young people. Kendra, a junior at Kauai High School, developed a program to decorate the dining hall of the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, making a gloomy space more inviting to its clients. She engaged school and church youth groups to help decorate the soup kitchen each month, expanding the pool of available volunteers and raising the volunteers’ awareness of the struggles faced by their economically disadvantaged neighbors. She also marketed the project through a brochure, a PowerPoint presentation, and a training manual to guide project volunteers.

Kendra will receive $1,000, a silver medallion, and a trip in early May to Washington, D.C., where she will take part in several days of national recognition events and have an opportunity to be named one of America’s top ten youth volunteers for 2007. Congratulations to Kendra for earning this exceptional award by making her community a better place.

• Hawaii/Colorado 4-H Exchange Opportunity

I am the County Director in the tiny high mountain county of Jackson, Colorado which is 60 miles East of Steamboat Springs, 100 miles West of Fort Collins and 65 miles South of Laramie, Wyoming.

My 4-H members are just starting a 4-H Exchange group and were hoping to do an Exchange with 4-H members in Hawaii. We've heard that Hawaii doesn't have an Exchange program, but thought it would be worth the effort to check into it ourselves. I'm hoping you might help me connect with 4-H agents and program leaders in Hawaii. I think we're going to have a small group for this first exchange with appx 8 youth and 4 adults who are hoping to host in 2008 and travel in 2009. We live in a beautiful mountain valley with big mountains all the way around and could offer many fun Colorado experiences for our Hawaii guests.

• 4-H Spring Fling

Over 300 youngsters from the Hawaii Army school age programs participated in the annual 4-H Spring Fling on March 31, 2007 at the Bennett Youth Center in Schofield. This year’s event focused on the USDA/Army curriculum “Up for the Challenge”. The youngsters participated in learning activities that addressed healthy eating and keeping physically active. Several 4-H members took part in presenting the learning modules. The Army Sports program staff also provided an obstacle course.

• 4-H Life Fitness Extravaganza

On the very same day of the 4-H Spring Fling, the Hawaii 4-H military teen program also held their “4-H Life Fitness Extravaganza” a few miles away at the Schofield Teen Center. 60 Army and Air Force teens took part in a day long program which started off with a GPS scavenger hunt to various 4-H skill a thon type stations. Throughout the day, the teens experienced sessions centered around 4-H project areas such as photography, theatre arts, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles and had a great time doing so. They also had a chance to get to know and interact with teens from other centers.

This was the first time a joint 4-H teen event has been held. Kudos to all those who made it possible!

• 4-H Read to Me at Pearl Harbor Springfest

Thanks to teen readers from Farrington High School’s Volunteer Literacy Program and Schofield Teen Center, the 4-H Read to Me program provided enriching reading experiences for the children and families attending the Pearl Harbor Springfest on Saturday, April 21st.

• Brower Youth Awards

The Brower Youth Awards are looking for outstanding youth leaders ages 13-22 with the power and persistence to create environmental change. The Brower Youth Awards honors six young people annually for their outstanding work for the planet. Each winner is awarded $3000 and brought to the San Francisco Bay Area for a week of media and public outreach, leadership support, bonding with the other award recipients, and a scenic camping trip.
