President’s Message

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

It’s hard to believe March is already here and the 4-H year is more than halfway over.  I hope you enjoyed our events so far and look forward to seeing you at our upcoming activities.

I would like to acknowledge and thank all the agents, leaders, alumni, members and volunteers who assisted in making the Food Show a success.  Special thanks to Aunty Linda and the members of the Farrington FCCLA Chapter for doing an excellent job chairing the Food Show.  Congratulations to all participants!  You are all winners for your effort, hard work, creativity, and awesome execution.  I was definitely impressed with the level of ingenuity expressed in the entries!!

I congratulate the candidates nominated for the 2007-2008 Oahu Executive Board and hope you submit your articles for the next newsletter.  I encourage all other members to evaluate becoming an Executive Board officer.  Being on the Executive Board is a tremendous learning experience and I hope all 4-H members take advantage of this great opportunity to “learn by doing”.  I hope to see everyone at the elections which will be held during the April 15, 2007 Oahu Council Meeting.

With spring break at the end of this month, I wish you a great and safe vacation!  It would be a good time to take that last picture to enter into the upcoming Communications Fair or to start planning your speeches.

Record Books

This is March and it is not too late to start organizing your data to compile your record books.  So far if you entered the Fashion Show and Food Show and won a ribbon, you could record that information in the record book.  If you go to the 4-H website, you will find the four record books.

Form 2002-1 Cloverbud Record book- this is for 4-Hers 5 to 8 years old to fill out.
Form 2002-2 Junior Record book is for 4-Hers 13 years old and younger.
Form 2002-3 Senior Record book is for 4-Hers 14 and older to fill out.
Form 2002-4 Senior Portfolio is for those who want to attend National 4-H Congress; this is the form to fill out.

The record books can be complicated to fill out, but if you organize your information and do it every year, it shouldn’t be hard.  This information is important for all of you because it tells a story of learning situations you have done.  If you record the information it will be there for you to remember.  If at any time you or your club need help in filling out the forms, don’t hesitate to call me at 622-4185.

The Senior Portfolio is due on May 15th for County and May 25th for State.  That is if you want to try for Congress.  The rest of the record books are due on June 1st.  I hope that other senior members will fill out the portfolio and apply to attend National 4-H Congress.

Ahaolelo 2007

It is that time of the year to start planning whether you want to attend our 4-H teen conference, Ahaolelo 2007.  Conference delegates will be staying in the dorms and participating in workshops on the University of Hawaii Campus.  This year’s theme is “Lead, Learn, Grow”.  The conference will start on June 8 and end on the 11th.  It is right after school ends and just before summer school begins.  If you haven’t attended Ahaolelo before, it is a good time to start thinking about coming out this year.

There will be educational workshops on leadership, service learning projects, time to meet other 4-Hers from across the state, a nice luncheon sponsored by the Hawaii 4-H Foundation, the Gift to the Ali’i Ceremony and a fun night at a show.  Ahaolelo is for teens 13 and older.  Plans are still been finalized, so stay tuned for more information on this up and coming fun and educational event.

Congress Reflection

After having spent many months of hard work on my senior portfolio I was hoping to be chosen as a delegate for National 4-H Congress.  When I found out that I was one of the two 4-Her’s from Oahu, I was ecstatic, counting down the days until I departed.  Finally, when the day came I was dreading the homework that I’d have to catch up on, but I knew that the conference was worth it.

Despite the long flight and having to function a whole day without sleep, I made it through the fun-filled day.  After about an hour of rest, the Hawaii delegates headed over to the Georgia Aquarium where we took many pictures of sea otters, penguins, humongous crabs, and many types of fishes.  About two hours later we walked back to the hotel where delegates from other states began to arrive.

From there everything we did was nothing but pure fun.  The design team brought in various motivational speakers and planned out many activities for us to do.  For most of the day we were sitting in on different workshops and bonding with other 4-Her’s.  Our delegates were given sixteen tickets, each one naming a different type of workshop.  The first workshop that I attended was “The Healthy Gourmet”, where I learned how to make “Steak Diane” from one of the executive chefs at the Hilton Atlanta.  In one of the other workshops that I attended, we split up into groups and created a thank you PSA for our troops in Iraq for “Operation Military Kids”.

Only a day had passed and already I became close with my three roommates, one from Kona and the other two from Maui, as well as a few of the other delegates.  On the second night, international night, we Hawaii delegates were like celebrities.  All of the other delegates mobbed us, hoping to trade their state pin with one of the unique gifts that we had brought.  It’s amazing and pretty funny how they were crazy about the cheap shell leis that we can get for 25 cents.

The next day we went on a tour around Atlanta, where I got to walk around in the Coca-Cola museum.  I will admit that I really didn’t spend that much time in the actual museum, but instead in the gift shop, where I splurged and spent about $100, a mediocre amount compared to my friends from Maui.  That night, at “Congress Gala”, it felt like prom again.  We dressed ourselves up and dolled up our faces.  After dinner was done, I sat back and relaxed until I was taught how to swing dance with a 4-Her from North Carolina and later, how to dance like a Puerto Rican!  It was such a fun-filled night for me, meeting new people and learning new dances.

Time flew!  Before I knew it everyone was exchanging emails and myspaces, in an attempt to keep in touch.  It hadn’t hit me that the conference was over yet because we stayed one extra day, which we spent at the mall and at night, figure skating in an outdoor rink!  Finally the time came when we had to hop on the plane and go home.  I couldn’t believe that it was all over.  It went by so quickly and I felt as if I had just gotten there and I was leaving already.  Nonetheless, the whole Congress experience is something I will never forget.  I met so many different people and had so much fun!  My roommates and I even bought friendship bracelets as a memory of the coolest room ever!  I encourage all of you 4-Her’s to complete your portfolio because believe me, it’s all worth it!  If you choose to do so, good luck and I promise you’ll have fun!

ZTN News Makes Its Debut!

Zama Teen Network’s (ZTN) news show made its historical debut on January 19, 2007.  A production of the Camp Zama (Japan) 4-H Video Club, ZTN uses the show to highlight the events of the Camp Zama Teen program.  Camp Zama Video 4-H club members are responsible to write, direct, produce and star in the news show.  The Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation channel is home to this production.  The production is aired hourly on Camp Zama channels and is also available on the internet at: http://zamayouthcenter.org/ZTN

In the past, Camp Zama 4-H’ers have developed and shared their video production skills by producing public service announcements, videos and commercials.  This is the first time they actually have their own weekly news show.

For the first show, the two anchors Samantha West and Reina Staley do a superior job announcing the up coming events at the Zama Teen Center as well as the current club meetings.  When asked what the most was challenging thing about being in front of a camera was, Reina Staley responded, “Knowing if you make a mistake and a lot of (thousands) people will be watching you and it just…adds pressure you know”.

4-H’ers also work hard behind the scenes, filming, directing and editing.  Amanda Cayton, youth chief editor, said “The neatest thing about participating is this project is when you finish the project and are able to acknowledge that you made this.  The best part is when you can see your final work after much stress and accomplishments”.

Camp Zama Technology Coordinator and 4-H club leader, Ervin Lawrence comments about the students and the project, “It can be pretty stressful trying to shoot everything in two hours working with 10 teens and then have the finish product done in two days.  But it is well worth it when you see the youth smile when they see their finished product on TV.”

Sharing 4-H Experiences Out in the Community

Just days after retiring from their day jobs, 4-H volunteers Janice Motoshige and Annette Wong were back working again, this time taking 4-H learning opportunities out to youth at Jarrett Middle School.  Besides spending two afternoons a week helping these youngsters with their Read to Me projects, both also share the project at other sites as well.  4-H is indeed fortunate to have these volunteers who continue to give, share and work with our youth!
