Record Books

I want to thank all of you who turned in a record book in June.  You all did a wonderful job in completing the record books.  The leaders who turned out to help with the judging had a great time reviewing the books, writing comments and reading the stories.  There were two outstanding record books Josh Ayers and Farin Fukunaga that received a purple ribbon.  In this issue of the newsletter, I would like to share with you Josh’s 4-H story.

My 4-H Story by Josh Ayers

My name is Josh Ayers and I am in the Kapolei Explorers 4-H Club.  I am 13 years old, and this is my 8th year in 4-H.  My projects this year were my pet bunnies, cooking & nutrition, and gardening & photography.

My bunnies, Rachel and Ashley, are my favorite project.  Everyday I make sure they have enough food and water.  I look after their health too.  Sometimes one of the bunnies will lose a patch of fur, so I clean the area and make sure that it heals.  I gave a demonstration about caring for your bunny at the 4-H Communications Fair, which was held at the University of Hawaii.  Since I couldn’t bring my bunnies to the demonstration I held a stuffed rabbit and demonstrated how to hold a bunny so she won’t get hurt.  I also showed how not to hold a bunny and that is by the ears!

Cooking Macadamia Nut Chicken Breast was probably the hardest thing I made in my foods and nutrition project.  After chopping up the macadamia nuts I had to get them to stick to the chicken and then fry it up.  I found that cutting the chicken into smaller, bite size pieces made it easier.  That way, I could feed the deformed or slightly burned pieces to my brothers.  The other recipe that I cooked for the 4-H Food Show was Poi Muffins.  Originally the recipe was for bread, but I wanted to bake something that was easy and quick to eat.  I think it cooks faster too, since muffins are smaller than a loaf of bread.  I won the President’s Choice Award from Amber for the Macadamia Nut Chicken Breast.  Our club’s favorite cooking activity was comparing homemade graham cracker crust to store-bought crust, with store-bought winning.

Our club continues to care for our fruit trees that we planted.  They are actually producing fruits and I'm happy about that!  I'd like to plant some kind of garden next year.  I just have to find the space and then see what grows best in this weather.

We visited Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii.  One of our club goals was to try and take better photographs.  I still like to take pictures of my bunnies.  We visited waterfalls and hiked around in some huge craters.

I tried some new things this year.  I made a poster about 4-H and wrote an essay about 4-H.  I entered these in the 4-H Communications Fair along with my 8 photographs.  I went to the plating class at the University of Hawaii in December.  Miss Linda’s students showed how to make food look good on plates.  I helped at the 4-H Information Booth at the Children and Youth Day at the State Capitol.  Our club helped Miss Maryknoll set up the booth and then I helped kids with the crafts and answered questions about 4-H.  For community service I’ve volunteered to work at the church on Men’s Work Day.  I managed the tool supply and helped build a fence for the pre-school there.

In summary, I’ve had a good year with my projects, a demonstration, photographs, essay, and poster at the Communications’ Fair, plating class, the Food Show, and community service.

Make it Your Own Awards

Do you have big dreams for your community?  The Case Foundation is launching a pilot grants program that could turn these dreams into reality.  The Make It Your Own Awards™, a new initiative from the Case Foundation is about giving grants, tools, and recognition to people who are coming together to discuss what matters, form solutions, and take action.  Twenty semi-finalists will each receive $10,000 grants to start bringing their ideas to life.  Four final grant recipients will then be chosen by the public using an online voting system. These finalists will each be awarded an additional $25,000 grant.  The Make It Your Own Awards came about in response to research showing that many people feel disconnected from public leaders and institutions and don’t believe they have the power to make a real difference in their community.

Passionate individuals can apply, (age 14 or older) who are working with small, local organizations or groups, and who reside in one of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.  Applicants must submit an idea for one of these same locations (no international projects).  Application deadline: August 8th.

To learn more and apply today, visit: www.casefoundation.org/make-it-your-own/awards?source=partnerNL_YSA.  Questions?  Email: contactus@casefoundation.org.
