Welcome to Oahu 4-H's online newsletter.
Happy Easter Everyone!
I hope you had a great spring break and are re-energized to finish out the 4-H year with a bang! There are still many opportunities available for 4-H members to participate and learn through their experiences. I encourage all of you to take advantage of what 4-H offers because you will definitely grow and develop through your efforts.
Corresponding Secretary: Hi! My name is Valerie Inafuku and I’m running for Corresponding Secretary and Historian. Next year I will be a Junior at Mililani High school. I have been in 4-H for about seven years now in the Pot of Gold 4-H club. I enjoy singing and have been in choir since the third grade. I also like to take pictures & write poems or short stories. After I graduate I would most likely want to be either a Journalist/photographer or an English/music teacher. I have been playing piano for nine years now. I keep myself busy in 4-H, AP classes, Chorus, Marching Band as a percussionist, Winterline, Jazz band, Lacrosse, and Student Council. I have been the Recording Secretary for my class for two years now. I am the current Historian for 4-H for the year 2006-2007. 4-H has really taught me leadership skills and also confidence to get up in front of pretty much anyone and talk. It has also taught me how to work with anyone to get something done and responsibility. Being on the Council was a great experience and I hope to continue it. Please vote for me at the council meeting! (: Anyone who wishes to be a part of the 2007-2008 Oahu 4-H executive board, please attend the Elections Council Meeting on April 15 @ 3:30 pm (Urban Garden Center)! Hannah Wong
I am in kindergarten at St. Joseph's School in Waipahu. I live in the Honolulu area. Won't you please invite me to join your 4-H club? I love music and dance and my favorite pastime is doing all types of arts & crafts. Please call Maryknoll at 453-6053.
The New Communities Project is busy again at Kuhio Park Terrace (KPT)! The 4-H Youth Development Program is an opportunity of a lifetime for the youth in the community. Here are updates of what’s happening with 4-H at the PACT/Community Teen Program:
Ft. Shafter has a new and very exciting club up and running! The 4-H Plant Club has ten school age children working very hard on a gardening project located on the facilities. The children have planted 9 different types of common vegetables. The 4-H’ers are taking great pride in their garden. They have seen tiny seeds grow into vivacious plants. In the up coming weeks the vegetables will be ready for harvest.
The Army National Guard held a Youth Camp March 26-30 at Bellows Air Force Base. The seventy plus children were able to experience many different activities which included four different 4-H sessions, ranging from fast food awareness to physical fitness, healthy eating, and learning about building and launching rockets.
Mississippi State University Extension 4-H (MSU-ES 4-H) is working with National 4-H Council to support implementation of the Health Rocks! Healthy Life Program this year. Selected local community sites must reach a minimum of 200 youth participants in an out-of school setting. Organizations selected as community sites will receive a grant of up to $2,000 through MSU-ES, curricula, training, and incentive items at no charge. Selected community sites will send a team of three (two teens between the ages of 14 and 18, and one adult leader) to a training session to be held at the C. A. Vines Arkansas 4-H Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, July 6-8, 2007. Travel will be arranged and paid by MSU-ES. An agenda and schedule for this event are available at http://msucares.com/4h_Youth/health_rocks/index.html. Anyone interested in this program is encouraged to submit a proposal to MSU-ES 4-H. Proposals must be received by 5:00 p.m. CDT, April 23, 2007. Proposals may be e-mailed, faxed or mailed to the contact person listed in the RFP - not National 4-H Council. Decisions will be announced on or before May 1, 2007. Questions regarding the Request for Proposal are encouraged and should be submitted to Dr. Susan Holder at susanh@ext.msstate.edu or Dr. Rae Wilkinson at raew@ext.msstate.edu. The Request for Proposals can be found at: http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/HealthWellnessSafetyProgram.aspx
"Internet Photo Essays," comprising lesson plans for 8 sessions, introduces 12 to 14-year-olds to tools and techniques that can be used to create original digital content about issues, trends and happenings that are important to them. This project is targeted to 12 to 14-year-olds because at that age, current events, social issues, politics and history are common themes in students' schoolwork, in the literature and media they are exposed to, and in their personal lives. The emphasis on multimedia and Internet skills is intended to help youth gain the advanced technology skills they need to pursue higher education and employment.
