President’s Message
Aloha 4-Hers,

The school year is finishing up as well as the 4-H year.  To conclude this year, our last council meeting will be on May 21, 2006.  Anyone nominated to be an officer on the 2006-2007 Executive Board must be at the meeting to be elected.

The record books are also due soon.  Any person completing a senior portfolio, they are due by May 15.  Also the Speech and Demonstration Fair is on May 13, so start practicing your speeches and demonstrations, not to just get a blue ribbon, but to also become better speakers.

Thank you to everyone who has submitted entries for the photography contest.  In the next few months they will be judged and displayed for you at the achievement banquet.

At the end of the year your workload tends to increase due to schoolwork and 4-H activities, such as practicing your speeches, studying for finals, taking photos, finishing up record books, or even getting ready to start college in the fall.  Every person’s mind is consumed by future events and dead lines which have to be met.  Try your hardest not to wait until the night before, before you start writing your paper or memorizing your speeches.  This time of the year is always the hardest for students, but just keep in mind that in a month you will be relaxing with your friends during summer vacation.

Have a wonderful May and I hope to see everyone at the May Council Meeting.

Aloha,

Hannah

Upcoming Oahu Events
Bake Sale Fundraiser
Merle Morikawa, Director of Momilani Elementary Afterschool Program invited Oahu County 4-H to participate in a fund raiser at the Momilani Elementary School Fair.  Thanks to the donations of baked goods and snacks from Pot of Gold, Just Us, Napilialoha, and Ethel Murata we raised $150.00 for the Council.  Ethel, Sakaye and I manned the sale booth.  It was fun to see about 700 parents, grand parents and youngsters all participating in this school event.  Thanks, Merle for inviting 4-H to participate.

Don't forget that the senior portfolio is due on May 15th to one of the Extension offices.  To complete the senior portfolio you will need to complete the record book, resume, and story.   If you complete the senior portfolio and you qualify, it will be entered for state judging which may qualify you for a trip to National 4-H Club Congress in Atlanta, Georgia.

Coconut Island, Here We Come!
July 28-30, 2006

Coconut Island is located in Kaneohe Bay accessible only via boat.  It is run by the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology-UHM.  We have permission to stay overnight on the island.  I have talked to the Community Program Educator and have expressed to help them with their projects on the island.  We will also continue with the 4-H 101 program, do another woodcraft with Sandy and Merle M. will be hosting a workshop.

The tour around the island is by foot and very manageable for all ages and size.  It is an excellent tour; very educational and interesting.  We are thinking of hiring a bus to take us there, as parking is limited.

Please let me know if this is a good time.  Also, would you like to conduct a fun, educational experience?           Call Maryknoll at 453-6053

Other Opportunities
Global Connection 4-H Project
"Hello, my name is Joseph Gedgaud and I am from Clay County, Moorhead Minnesota. I am in the Oakmound 4-H club. I am doing a global connection project for a 4-H project. I want to show people that 4-H is different yet the same throughout the United States and even in Europe or any other country. I would like to receive information from 4-H’ers about their 4-H clubs. The following is what I’d like to know:

What is your name of your club/county/state?
Type of club (project club or after-school program or 4-H adventures, etc.):
What is something special you are doing that other clubs might not do?
What do you do to go to the county/state fair?
Number of members in the club?
Age range?
How often do you meet?
Special projects?
Community service projects?
How is your county level 4-H run?
And any other special thing you want to say?

I have shared my plans for this project with Becky Harrington, Clay County 4-H Program Coordinator, University of Minnesota Extension Service. She may be reached at willi107@umn.edu or 218-299-5020 if you have questions regarding my 4-H membership.

Please E-mail me back as soon as possible. My E-mail is: joey@702com.net."
