President’s Message

Aloha 4-Hers,

     Summer has finally arrived! School is out and the 4-H year is wrapping up. Congratulations to all 4-Hers who are graduating this year, you made it!

     This past council meeting a new executive board was elected. I would like to congratulate each and every individual who has been elected.

     Just a reminder to everyone- our Achievement Banquet is on June 24, 2006. We hope to see you all there to say goodbye to the outgoing board members and to welcome the incoming members. Another reason to attend the Achievement Banquet is that the photography entries will be displayed. I would like to thank all of the participants who turned photos. I received 92 photos all together. Right now they are in the process of being judged.

     This year we have not had our annual Fashion Revue yet. Valerie Inafuku has volunteered to chair the Fashion Revue, which will be held in October.

     In May we also had our 4-H Speech and Demonstrations Fair. Each 4-Her who participated did a great job. It was very evident that lots of time and practice was needed to memorize and practice his/her demo or speech. I would also like to thank Lori for chairing the event.

     Lastly, since the year is closing up I would like to thank this year’s executive board, for working very hard and taking the initiative to help in the planning and chairing of many events. The year was successful because of their hard work. Thank You!

• 2006 Speech and Demonstration Fair

Also congratulations to Kyrra Lau-Eglinton for her presentation “Lessons from the Past.” She was awarded a Purple Judge’s Consensus Award for her excellent oration. Mahalo to Reina Horikawa for generously spending her time with 4-Hers to conduct a Speech and Demonstration Workshop. The workshop was held at the Urban Garden Center on April 23 2006, in which Reina taught everyone speaking and presenting skills that will last a lifetime. • There's Always Room for Dessert!

Na Pilialoha 4-H Club is chairing the refreshment committee for the annual 4-H Achievement Banquet. We would like to request each club attending this banquet to please bring a dessert to share. Something sweet to eat is a perfect way to end a great day. See you on June 24!

• PARO 4-H Tech Team Bound for 4-H Technology Conference

Congratulations to Camp Zama 4-H’er Lew Barrett and Aliamanu Teen Center 4-H’er Carlos Vazquez who are two of three youth that will represent the US Army’s Pacific Area Region in Youth Technology programs and will attend the National 4-H Technology Conference from July 24-27, 2006 at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. USDA Specialist Bob Greenberg will accompany and work with the team. The PARO 4-H Tech Team will help develop the Region Youth Technology Team plan of work and work with teens and staff to create and maintain a Garrison Youth web page.

• Hero Pins Distributed!

Thanks to Cliff Duro of the National Guard Family Support Program for providing us a photo of a child who received one of the Hero Pins and certificates that Oahu 4-H’ers put together this past spring. The National Guard held Freedom Salute ceremonies in each county for returning soldiers and their families.

• Wonderwise at National Guard Youth Camp

Army teens will join forces with 4-H’ers from Molokai and the Big Island to provide Wonderwise (science and math oriented project) sessions for the youth attending this year’s National Guard Youth Camp from June 30 – July 3 out at Bellows. Approximately 100 youth from across the state will attend the camp.

• MTL to be used for Operation Purple Camp

The Hawaii OMK 4-H Mobile Tech Lab will travel to Hawaii’s Operation Purple Camp (a camp hosted by the Navy for children with a deployed parent) and will be used to provide workshops for the children attending the weeklong camp. The children will learn to utilize various software to create a Hawaiian style monopoly game.

• goCyberCamp: Extending 4-H Programming into Cyberspace

Just as summer camp and other 4-H programs provide educational, fun, recreational, and social opportunities for children - so does goCyberCamp! goCyberCamp is a web-based 4-H "camp" that provides hands-on learning experiences through interactive games and activities that teach science and technology, plants and animals, ecology and natural resources, and arts and crafts. Along with providing children with unique opportunities for discovery and exploration, goCyberCamp supports 4-H Educators and Volunteers with curricular materials to help them further engage children through offline hands-on activities that extend online learning and fun.

goCyberCamp (http://gocybercamp.org) is available to children and their 4-H Educators or Volunteers anywhere and anytime. Plus, it's available free of charge! Check it out. It’s fun learning for children between the ages of 8-12.

• Start-Up Funds Available for Sustainable Projects

Win Up To $1,000 In Start-Up Funds For Sustainable National & Global Youth Service Day Projects By Joining the YSA Youth Venture Program. Through partial funding from the US Department of Justice, Youth Service America and Youth Venture, Inc. are teaming up again to further strengthen the youth service movement. In conjunction with National & Global Youth Service Day 2007, April 20-22, funding will be offered to enable young people to engage in community service and make a difference in their world every day. Thirty awards of up to $1,000 in start-up funds will be available to young people (ages 12-20) who want to create innovative, new, sustainable and civic-minded organizations, clubs or businesses ("ventures").

Applications must be received by 5:00pm EST on July 24th, 2006. It is encouraged (but not required) that all applications be submitted electronically via email. For more information and to access an application visit Youth Venture.
