President’s Message
Aloha 4-Hers,

I hope everyone had a great 4-H year.  It sure did go by really fast!  This past month we had our annual achievement banquet.  Thank you, Renni Fay and Sara for chairing this event; you both did a great job.

At the achievement banquet the photography entries were exhibited.  All of the pictures and judging sheets were given back to the leaders of each club.  The majority of white ribbons came from the senior division.  At this level, the judges were looking for higher level of quality of photos and were more meticulous than other divisions.  I hope this will encourage you to continue participating and search for that ideal photo.   All together there were 91 entries with 4 purple ribbons.  I would like to thank all the participants and congratulate them for doing a great job.

Since this is my last message I want to take the time to thank the people who made this year possible.  First off, I would like to thank this year’s executive board for accomplishing their tasks and making the effort to come to the meetings.  This was the first year that 4-Hers took the initiative to chair the events.  Many of the events and projects were chaired by an executive board member, and again I would like to thank you.

I would also like to thank Aunty Rose for advising the board and helping us through this entire year.  The executive board and I could not have made it through the entire year without your help.

Lastly I would like to thank the other agents, parents, 4-Hers, and 4-H leaders for participating, supporting, and helping in enforcing the 4-H goals.

I would like to thank all the 4-Hers for giving me the privilege as serving as your 2005-2006 Oahu County President.  I look forward to next year with Amber as your new President.   I’m sure you will all give her your support.  Have a great summer!

Aloha,

Hannah

Children and Youth Day 2006

    Sunday, October 1, 2006
    State Capitol
    10:00 am to 3:00 pm

We have taken your suggestion from the 4-H banquet to publicize and recruit more 4-H’ers by participating in the Children and Youth Day.

We shall have two hands-on, take home activities, 4-H video showings, and feature the 4-H juried curriculum.  We shall distribute 4-H flyers and various posters.  Last year, there were 30,000 youth in attendance.  You can also tour for free, State Capitol, Iolani Palace Gallery, Washington Place and the Hawaii State Art Museum; delicious food; great entertainment; and the booths.

We Need You!  Please help us by manning our 4-H booth and activities and by talking to those that visit our booth.  We shall have easy activities to teach the children. You do not have to be there all day.  Let me know what your schedule for this day will be. If your club wants to teach something, let me know.

Please bring your own chairs, snack/drinks, lunch and wear your 4-H uniform.  Call Maryknoll at 453-6053.

The Hawaii Army Child and Youth Services is inviting four 4-H members and one adult volunteer chaperone to take part in their mini Youth Leadership Forum over the Labor Day weekend.  4-H’ers must be incoming 9th-12th graders.

The leadership forum will focus on Character counts and will train participants to provide Wonderwise (science and math) learning experiences for middle school youth.  The Army will cover food and lodging costs for the 4-H’ers and their chaperone.

Participants must remain at the camp site from 9 am on Saturday until camp breaks at 4 pm on Monday and be willing to conduct Wonderwise learning experiences in their community.

Those interested in taking part in the Youth Leadership Forum are asked to contact Claire Nakatsuka via email at nakatsuk@hawaii.edu or phone 956-7196 by July 26, 2006. This is a great opportunity to not only gain leadership skills but also form working relationships with our military teens.

World's Largest Thanksgiving Dinner to Honor Veterans

All schools are being encouraged to organize “America’s All Stars’ World's Largest Thanksgiving Dinner" to honor and thank (at Thanksgiving) all veterans from WWII to the present.

This nationwide, service-learning project will raise money for children and families affected by the ongoing Middle East conflicts.  Proceeds will go to the USO.

Visit www.4allstars.org to download a Dinner Planning Guide and Press Kit that will walk you through planning a community-service dinner at your school, church, or civic organization and to listen to a 60-second PSA.  The dinners will be held in school cafeterias, armories, and civic centers nationwide on the same day, November 16, 2006, the Thursday BEFORE Thanksgiving.

Please send this to everyone you know, especially those in school and to those serving, or who have ever served, in the Armed Forces—this will be very meaningful to them and their families.  You can sign up your school or organization at www.4allstars.org or on SERVEnet

Let's all join together to put on the World's Largest Thanksgiving Dinner, invite every veteran in your community as your (free) guest, and make this Thanksgiving especially meaningful for those affected by the war.

The ambitious three-year Red, White & Green Campaign is intended to encourage widespread youth engagement on the issue of climate change leading up to the 2008 national presidential election. Grantees will bring their project results and their public policy recommendations to Washington, DC for a three-day Youth Summit in late 2007."
