Robotics Training for 4-H Leaders to be held on November 24th

Did you know that thousands of various kinds of robots are employed for jobs which are too dirty, dangerous or dull to be suitable for humans?  Robots are widely used in manufacturing, assembly and packing, transport, earth and space exploration, surgery, weaponry, laboratory research, and mass production of consumer and industrial goods.  Robotics has a growing field of specialists, and sparking an interest in youth early on could lead to excellent career choices or a very fun hobby!

Come join the fun and learn how Robotics can be an interesting and educational addition to your Science or Technology 4-H club.  Myla Gumayagay, Site Facilitator for Keaukaha Technology and Resource Center in Hilo will be leading participants through work with LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education NXT Base Set, which she has utilized in projects with youth on the Big Island.

Training is sponsored by UH Cooperative Extension 4-H program and is FREE to all participants.  The training will be held from 9-1pm at Bldg 505 Bonny Loop, Fort Shafter (the School-Age and Teen Center building.)  Bring your robotics kits if you have them, but you are invited to come even if you don’t; this hands-on learning experience will be useful for future robotics projects.

For more information or to RSVP (by Nov 17th please!) contact Carmen Golay, Military 4-H Program Assistant at 956-4125.  *Sponsorship into Fort Shafter is available if you RSVP by Nov. 17th.

Military 4-H Clubs Kick Off a New Year

Six after school programs and four teen centers on Oahu have kicked off the 2008-2009 4-H year with a wide variety of clubs and interests.  Aliamanu Military Reserveration (AMR) school-age program has six project clubs including Hawaiiana, Camp Adventures, Bike Safety, Volleyball, Health & First Aid and Cloverbuds.  Teens at AMR will be working on club projects in gardening, cooking and quilt-making.  Out at Schofield Barracks, Bennett Youth Center has eight project clubs which include: Photography, Fine Arts, Citizenship, Music & Drama, Cloverbuds, Que Rico! (Latino Culture), Veterinary Sciences and Robotics.  Teens at Schofield will be focusing on three project areas including Nutrition & Fitness, Service-Learning and Science & Technology.  School-age 4-Hers at Helemano Military Reservation will be working on projects in Science, Exploring the Treasures of 4-H and also doing Cloverbuds, which is especially geared towards kindergarten, first and second graders.  Outside of Hawaii, other military reservations that the Cooperative Extension supports are located in Japan (Camp Zama), Kwajalein Atoll and also four Army sites in Korea.  Kwajalein 4-Hers will be focusing on Citizenship and learning more about club structure, while Navy sites in Japan and Korea begin forming 4-H clubs this year.

The Army, Navy, and Air Force partnerships with national 4-H are an important part of both school-age and teen center programming in Hawaii and around the world.  Youth who must move with their active duty military parent(s) can count on being able to join a 4-H club and continue learning in a project area or switch project areas as interests change.  The familiar sight of the green clover, 4-H pledge, and meeting structure may help young people settle in more quickly and make friends when frequent moves change other parts of their lives.  4-H has, for more than 100 years, been a building block in the lives of young Americans.  Dedicated leaders and other caring adults make it possible for youth to become smart (head), caring (heart), productive (hands) and active (health) members of communities.  We look forward to seeing all the wonderful projects young people at the school-age centers and teen centers produce this year!

The Secret Life of Bees: 4-H Connection

"The Secret Life of Bees" is based on the novel by author Sue Monk Kidd.  Ms. Kidd is a 4-H alumna who credits her 4-H club experience in entomology and reading as a positive force in her life and career: "Wouldn't you know-- my history with 4-H has to do with books and bugs. So perhaps it is not completely surprising that I grew up not only to read books, but write them, and that one of those books was about the secret life of the Apis Mellifera."

You can find out more about the film, read Ms. Kidd's full story, follow her on a special backstage tour, and view special souvenirs by visiting www.4-H.org. "The Secret Life of Bees" was released on October 17 to great reviews and is in theaters everywhere now.

Wild Ones Seeds for Education (Deadline: November 15)

For years Wild Ones® members and chapters have worked with schools and nature centers to plant and maintain natural landscapes in these centers of learning.  Wild Ones is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the use of natural landscaping with native plant species as an ecologically better alternative to traditional landscaping practices.  Schools, nature centers and other nonprofit organizations may apply for a grant annually.  Projects must emphasize involvement of students and volunteers and increase the educational value of the site.  Creativity in design is encouraged, but must show complete and thoughtful planning.  The use of and teaching about native plants and the native plant community is mandatory.  Funds will be provided only for the purchase of native plants and seed.  For additional guidelines, visit http://www.for-wild.org/sfecvr.html
